Kevin Cleary captivated fans at the AMRA Jim McClure All-Harley Nitro World Finals, thrilling the crowd at Rockingham Dragway with a pass on his legendary “Hell Bound Train” – a vintage nitro Sportster with a storied history. This iconic machine, a two-time AMA Pro Dragster champion in 1984 and 1985, was one of the first nitro drag bikes, earning its place in racing history as a powerhouse of the 1980s.
The Hell Bound Train is a true labor of love, featuring a 72-inch Chromoly wheelbase chassis powered by a 96 CID Harley-Davidson engine core. Weighing in at a lean 395 pounds, every inch of this bike reflects an intense focus on weight-saving and streamlined performance.
Kevin and his brother Mike began building this extraordinary bike in 1983, with Carl Lowenpabst assisting in frame construction. By the end of that year, they were ready for track testing, leading to their championship debut in 1984. Decades later, Kevin’s Hell Bound Train continues to embody the spirit of vintage nitro racing and the dedication of those who built it.
