OSCAAR Headliners Help Launch New Month of Peterborough Speedway Action

A pair of crowd favourite fields rolled into Central Ontario – Saturday, August 3^rd – as the OSCAAR Modified and Hot Rod divisions were on hand to kick-off the final month of the 2024 regular season schedule at Peterborough Speedway.

 

Front row starters Wally Wilson and Steve Trendell set the table for the 40-lap Just Foam It OSCAAR Modified feature tilt on a hot and humid night. Wally Wilson took the lead early and logged some consistent times lap-after-lap. Even with the pace slowed for a couple of yellow flags, Wilson held off the challenge of some of the tour’s biggest names and earned a trip to the winner’s circle. Entering the night without a single main event or heat race win on his resume, the driver of the No. 69 Mod found the perfect set-up and claimed his first career OSCAAR Modified victory at a venue known for Making Memories for Life. AJ Emms, Jason Keen, Steve Trendell and Ryan Dick followed Wilson to the checkered flag.

 

Rookie of the Year hopeful Alex Dallaire and John Bates showed the way as the Battlefield Equipment Rental Bone Stockers headed to the track for a 20-lap main event. Dallaire – who has been strong all year – took the early lead, with Bates, Sean Kennedy and Johnnie McIntyre III on his tail. The top 5 spots featured some torrid battles, as Tegan Stanley’s ‘Rhonda the Honda’ started working through the pack. The driver of the No. 23 ride had moved into the 3^rd position just after the halfway mark. A pair of yellow flags brought the pack back together and saw Stanley claim the lead with only a couple of laps remaining and hold on for the race win. Dallaire, Kennedy, Bates and Angelo Novis rounded-out the top 5.

 

Brad Lavalle and Rob Crick brought the SwitchTire Mini stock field from the staging area for its feature event. Crick was the early race leader, with his friend and teammate Chris Tubman cracking the top 5 with a handful of laps on the scoreboard. A red flag brought proceedings to a halt, with Crick continuing to lead, Lavalle 2^nd and Mark Downer the new 3^rd place car. Rob Crick picked-up his 2^nd 2024 feature win, over Lavalle. After adjusted scoring – because of issues with the 3^rd and 4^th place finishers – Chris Tubman, Tyler McMurter and Downer were credited with 3^rd, 4^th and 5^th positions.

 

Trent Lakes Complete Plumbing Renegade Truck teams came to the Great Canadian RV green flag with Shawn Murray and Howie Crowe on the front row. Crowe took the green flag early and even though the former Super Stock track champion took control of the 20-lapper, all eyes were on the No. 52 ride of his teammate Mark Gordon who had started deep in the field. He was still a good distance away from Crowe when he moved into the runner-up position. The pair made a race out of it, but Gordon either ran out of time or ran out of laps as Howie Crowe grabbed the win. Murray, Scott Jacobs and Adam Chatten completed the top 5.

 

The crowd favourite JRS Auctions OSCAAR Hot Rods were next as the opening round of action for the month of August wrapped-up with a 30-lap feature event. Kenny McNicol Jr. and Rob Bromley were on the front row for the headliner that took a while to get rolling because of an early race yellow flag. Current point leader Tyler Hawn took the lead on the ensuing restart and had built-up a substantial lead with 10 laps on the scoreboard. The leaders began putting slower traffic a lap down with about 8 laps remaining and the event’s complexion changed when a late race caution saw Hawn head pit-side. Kenny McNicol Jr. was the new race leader with less than 3 laps to go and hung-on for the win. Dan Archibald, Bromley, Jamie Cairns and Hawn were next across the stripe.

 

All finishing positions are unofficial and subject to scoring review and post-race inspection. Even though he finished 1^st in each of his qualifying heat races and 4^th in the Mini Stock main event, Tyler Junkin was disqualified for illegal weight distribution. The No. 19 of Ember Junkin saw her 3^rd place feature race finish disallowed because of the same infraction.

 

Bullring bullet points: A Peterborough Speedway tradition continued Saturday, August 3^rd as the family of track owner J.P. Josiasse treated fans, racers, track staff and officials to a free pre-race corn roast…The night didn’t start off as planned for the No. 9 of Sean Kennedy. The current Bone Stock point leader rolled to a stop during the first practice session. With help from some other teams in the pit area, the team was able to replace a right-side driveshaft, tie rod and ball joint…Former Bone Stock track champion Shawn Solomon made his first start in several years, taking over the No. 06 machine for Christen Lavalle…After diagnosing and correcting issues under the hood, Carol Dawson logged a 9^th place, lead lap finish in the Mini Stock feature. The No. 38 team thanks Cory Horne for finding and fixing issues for them.

 

Coming-up Saturday, August 10^th at Peterborough Speedway, a 50-lap Mini Stock feature will be the spotlight event. Also on the docket will be the home track Renegade Truck and Junior Late Model divisions, along with the OMRS Modifieds and a pair of feature races for the Ontario Legend Car Series. King of the Hill timed spectator laps will be the weekly intermission feature. Spectator gates open at 4:00, with racing at 5:00.
