Vic Elford: 1935-2022

0 17

Vic Elford, one of the all-time great racing all-rounders has passed away after a long battle with cancer at the age of 86.

In a stellar career Vic raced In Formula One, NASCAR, Can Am, road and stage rallies, he won the first ever rallycross event and, of course there were a huge number of sportscar racing adventures including two class wins (in eight starts) at Le Mans, a famous Targa Florio win in 1968, having already won the Daytona 24 Hours and the Monte Carlo Rally in the previous year, the Daytona win Porsche’s first ever overall win in a 24 Hour race.

There was a win at Sebring in 1971 and multiple wins at the Nurburgring in the days of the old circuit – Add to that a victory too in the impossibly long Marathon de La Route in 1967 that combined both the Nordschleife and now disused Sudschleife in a 28 km lap, Vic completing 7 hour long stints to win the race with Hans Hermann and Jochen Neerpasch.

A delightful and modest man, despite his towering abilities, he was a firm favourite in his later years as a host of many Porsche club events, the German marque just one of a number of factories he served time with including Ford, Ferrari, Chaparral and Alfa Romeo.

We’ll be re-running a three part interview conducted by Malcolm Cracknell in tribute to his memory and his achievements in the sport.

Our deepest condolences go to all of his family, and to the vast number of friends he had in the sport and beyond.
