NHRA: Pro Stock Motorcycle Results from Denver

Pro Stock Motorcycle
Points leader Hines continued to roll in Pro Stock Motorcycle, picking up his sixth win in eight races this year by going 7.174 at 186.67 in the final round on his Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson FXDR to beat teammate Eddie Krawiec’s 7.222 at 186.38. Hines, who extended his points lead, put together an impressive result in the debut race of the new FXDR, beating Cory Reed, Hector Arana and defending world champ Matt Smith en route to the win.
Krawiec reached the final round with victories against Karen Stoffer, Jerry Savoie and defending event winner Hector Arana Jr., but there seems to be no stopping Hines in 2019 after he earned his class-best fifth win in Denver and 54th career victory. Hines, the winningest driver in the class, also became the first rider in Pro Stock Motorcycle to reach 500 career round wins on Sunday.
“Rolling out this new FXDR, it’s been so much work these last few months,” Hines said. “Bringing that motorcycle here, we didn’t know what quite to expect, but we put them both in the final round. You’ve got to have the full preparation and make sure your mind is right coming to these national events. Everybody in the class can step up at any time, and it seems like my bike has been in the right place at the right time in the right round. We just ride the wave when we can.”
The Mello Yello Drag Racing Series continues July 26-28 with the NHRA Sonoma Nationals at Sonoma Raceway. It is the second race of the NHRA’s famed three-race Western Swing, and eliminations will be shown live on the FOX national broadcast network.

SATURDAY QUALIFYING
Matt Smith makes a monster run to lead Denver Pro Stock Motorcycle field
Reigning world champ Matt Smith made the third quickest Pro Stock Motorcycle pass at Bandimere Speedway to earn the top qualifying spot for the second time this year and 33rd time in his career. After watching the Pro Stock car class make dramatic improvements, it was a given that their two-wheel counterparts would also improve but no one predicted his 7.132-second run, just short of the 7.111-second track record. Even Smith was shocked when he was handed his time slip.
“I didn’t think we’d see a number like that,” said Smith, who was also the low qualifier at the Las Vegas four-wide event and has been second in his two most recent events in Chicago and Norwalk. “After I saw [wife] Angie run a 7.20 I thought we might be able to run 7.17 or 7.16. I didn’t see a .13 coming. After we had that rain the track tightened up with no sun on it and my combination just stuck. That’s the fastest I’ve ever been up here. I took a tooth [sprocket] off today and it still nosed over before the finish line. I should have run almost 190-mph.
“I can’t say enough about my team and Denso and all those who support us,” said Smith. “You know, we’re just a little team out here. If you look at that black [Vance & Hines] trailer and see all they’ve got in there they should never lose a race. I’m also happy for Angie because this is the highest she’s ever qualified. We were just a hundredth or so from being No. 1 and No. 2 and that would have been cool.
Smith, a back-to-back winner in Denver in 2007-08, will have a round one match-up against bump spot qualifier Jimmy Underdahl who ran 7.377 on his Suzuki Extended Protection entry. Smith cannot race his wife, Angie, until the final round since she finished as the No. 3 qualifier, her best qualifying performance of the season.
Nearly as impressive as Smith run was the performance of 2016 world champion Jerry Savoie, who rode his White Alligator Suzuki to a 7.197 for the No. 2 spot. Savoie, who has sat out the three most recent events, was a runner-up in his most recent appearance in Atlanta. Harley-Davidson’s Andrew Hines, the leader after Friday’s two runs did not improve from his earlier 7.232 and was bumped to fourth with his new FXDR model. Hines’ teammates, Eddie Krawiec, and Angelle Sampey, finished in the top half of the field as the seventh and eighth qualifier respectively.

Andrew Hines makes the Harley-Davidson FXDR a winner in its Denver debut
You only get one chance to make a positive first impression and the Vance & Hines team is keenly aware of that after teammates Andrew Hines and Eddie Krawiec debuted their new Harley-Davidson FXDR models in the best way possible; with an all-Harley final round. Hines continued his record-setting season with his sixth win of the season in eight races, and the 54th of his career. Hines ran nothing but 7.1s on Sunday including a 7.174 in the final to easily cover Kraiewc, who ran an otherwise competitive 7.222. It was the fourth time the teammates have races in a final this season and Hines has won all of them.
While much has been made of Steve Torrence’s title defense in Top Fuel and rightfully so, Hines is also in the process of a history-making campaign. Following his latest win, the five-time class champion has a 25-2 record in elimination rounds and he’s only been beaten to the finish line once when he spun the tire in the opening round in Chicago against Andie Rawlings. His other loss came when his bike wouldn’t’ fire in the Las Vegas Four-Wide final.
Hines also earned the 500th round win of his career in his crucial semifinal win against low qualifier and reigning world champ Matt Smith. In what may have been the best race of the weekend, Smith grabbed a three-hundredths of a second lead at the start on his Denso EBR but it wasn’t enough after Hines rolled to a 7.183 to 7.238 victory. Hines is now 32-12 against Smith, who is easily the Harley team’s biggest rival.

On Saturday night, Hines believed he had a shot to take the pole from Smith, but his bike spun the tire on the starting line. Starting from the No. 4 spot, Hines was money in eliminations. In addition to his wins against Smith and Krawiec, Hines also beat Cory Reed and Hector Arana Sr. at Bandimere Speedway, his former home track.
Krawiec is still looking for his first win of the season, but that’s only because Hines has not yielded an inch in a final round. Like Hines, Krawiec also adjusted quickly to the new FXDR motorcycle with race-day wins against Karen Stoffer, Jerry Savoie, and Hector Arana Jr. In eight races this season, Krawiec has four runner-up finishes and two semifinals, and he’s got a nearly insurmountable grip on the second seed in the points standings.
