Safety Report – Summer 2018
By George Curl Safety Chairman It’s getting better from a safety stand point. More of you are watching out for yourself and your fellow drivers. Remember when you spin “Both feet in.” A driver told me he didn’t want to do that because it would leave a car stopped in the middle of the track. Think for a moment, is it easier to avoid a stopped car or one that is coming back across track right at you? An old adage: A moving car can change directions. If it’s stopped, it isn’t going anywhere. Which brings me to another important topic, ”Situational Awareness. Situational Awareness is paramount both on the trackand public roads. On track we have an advantage because hopefully, we’re all going the same direction. You must stay aware of what is going on around you. You do that on the highway while towing to an event, so transfer that skill to the track and put it to use. It’s too easy to let the dreaded “Red Mist” take over. Watch your competitors. Don’t be surprised by something they do on track. In simple terms, know what is going on around you and always leave yourself a way out. You have nothing to lose but the respect of your fellow drivers. We tested a roll cage Sunday at ECR. IT WORKED VERY WELL! As you prep your car for Hallet, pay careful attention to front spindles and rear half-shafts. A previously unknown crack on a front spindle broke, giving the driver one heck of a ride. The cage did its job and the driver escaped, a bit sore, but otherwise unharmed. What is the lesson here? Don’t let a mechanical spoil your or my weekend. Keep up with the preventative maintenance on your toys. Not only are you watching out for yourself, you’re looking out for me as well. Let’s be safe out there See y’all at Hallett!
