Northwestern Athletics honors ‘Nuestros Colores’ for Hispanic Heritage Month

For the first time in Northwestern history, Northwestern Athletics partnered with Latino Alumni of Northwestern (LANU) to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month at a pair of men’s and women’s soccer home games.

Por la primera vez en la historia de Northwestern, el departamento de atletismo se unió a Latino Alumni of Northwestern (LANU) para celebrar el Mes de la Herencia Hispana en un par de partidos locales del equipo masculino y femenino de fútbol.

Hispanic Heritage Month began Sept. 15 and ends Oct. 15, fitting perfectly into the soccer schedule. In Spanish-speaking communities, soccer is a sport held dearly across nations.

El Mes de la Herencia Hispana comenzó el 15 de septiembre y culmina el 15 de octubre, encajando perfectamente en el calendario de fútbol. En comunidades hispanohablantes, el fútbol es un deporte valorado entre naciones.

Celebrations were spread across two Northwestern games: men’s soccer against Rutgers Sept. 19 and women’s soccer against Ohio State Sept. 25. From custom T-shirt giveaways to Latin American music booming from the stadium speakers prior to kick-off time, the spirit was set for both evenings.

“We wanted to hold this institution accountable to providing Latino students with a Hispanic Heritage Month they deserve,” said LANU co-president Daniel Flores.

“Queríamos responsabilizar a esta institución de brindarles a los estudiantes latinos un mes de la herencia hispana que se merecen”, dijo el copresidente de LANU, Daniel Flores.

Flores said plans for a celebration like this one were “over a year in the making.” It all began with ideas brought forward to former Deputy Director of Athletics Deneé Barracato about how the university could be more intentional about celebrating Hispanic and Latino student athletes. After nothing was established for the fall of 2024, this past summer was when plans got up and running.

Todo comenzó con ideas presentadas a la ex subdirectora de atletismo Deneé Barracato sobre cómo la universidad podría ser más intencional a la hora de celebrar estudiantes atletas con herencia hispana y latina. With the help of Sr. Associate Athletic Director for Strategic Impact, Leadership and Student Engagement Maria Sanchez, LANU was able to pitch an extensive list of desired programming specific to Hispanic Heritage Month. Some of the ideas that ended up being implemented were themed matches, gear giveaways, a Spanish broadcast of the matches and Barra Brava supporter band in the stands.

Con la ayuda de la directora atlética asociada senior de impacto estratégico, liderazgo y participación estudiantil, Maria Sanchez, LANU pudo presentar una extensa lista de la deseada programación específica para el mes de la herencia hispana. Algunas de las ideas que al final terminaron siendo implementadas fueron partidos temáticos, ropa regalada, transmisión en español de los partidos y una banda de la Barra Brava en las gradas.

And that is how “Nuestros Colores” saw the light of day.

Y así es como “Nuestros Colores” vio la luz del día.

“We suggested multiple names for the event, but they selected our suggestion of “Nuestros Colores” to fully encompass this celebration was more than just soccer matches and aimed to include all sports,” Flores said.

“Nosotros sugerimos múltiples nombres para el evento, pero ellos seleccionaron nuestra sugerencia de “Nuestros Colores” para abarcar completamente que esta celebración era más que solo partidos de fútbol y buscaba incluir todos los deportes”, dijo Flores.

Student groups also participated. Mariachi Northwestern, Northwestern’s performance group rooted in Mexican mariachi music, was the halftime performer for the men’s game.

After having been contacted by Flores, who founded Mariachi Northwestern, in late August, the group was more than excited to participate.

“It was the most beautiful feeling to start walking to the field and hear the little children say ‘hola’ and ‘Oh, a mariachi!’” said Weinberg third-year and Mariachi Northwestern co-president Alexa Nuñez Magaña.

The initial nerve-wracking feelings quickly turned into excitement for the group, especially once everyone started clapping, doing “gritos” and cheering them on. It was described as one of the “more rewarding performances” the members had given.

“When we walked out, the kids lined up by the railing and put out their hands so we could high-five them,” Nuñez Magaña said. “Everyone was so happy.”

Days before each match, both soccer teams shared videos on their social media accounts highlighting players who celebrate their Hispanic heritage, giving them space to share their pride. These videos were also played on Northwestern Medicine Field at Martin Stadium’s videoboard pre-match time.

Fourth-year goalkeeper Rafael Ponce de León, fourth-year forward Alejandro Martinez Santamaria and second-year redshirt forwards Gregory Cook and Italo Addimandi represented the men’s side, priding themselves on Mexican, Spanish and Venezuelan heritage, respectively.

For women’s soccer, second-year defender Olivia Elliott, with Mexican heritage, shared how she remembers her family upbringing.

“Family is just a really big part of everything growing up,” Elliot said in the video. “They really just shaped everything about my childhood.”

According to the NCAA’s 2025 Demographics Database, only six percent of Division I student athletes are of Hispanic or Latino heritage. Flores says this is even more reason to hold space and highlight their contributions to their respective programs.

In the aftermath of “Nuestros Colores” celebrations, those who witnessed the special events left highly impressed. There were positive reactions all around among students, staff and alumni who attended or heard about the programming.

“They would have never imagined a mariachi halftime show or a game playlist featuring reggaetón or salsa classics playing during the match,” Flores said.

But “Nuestros Colores” does not end here. The initiative looks to go beyond the sport and Hispanic Heritage Month. Some of the expansions Flores mentioned were including all Northwestern sports to honor more Latinos, as well as bringing more fandoms and traditions to less attended sporting events on campus.

Expanding from athletics, Nuñez Magaña emphasized the importance of seeing cultural displays across campus throughout the whole year, not just for one month. She says this can make more students feel invited, included and belonging across academic spaces.

“Culture informs us, our values, our morals, our discipline, goals,” Nuñez Magaña said. “We exist within our culture and to ignore it is to downplay it as something that is not important to our achievements or ourselves.”

For Flores, it’s about advocating for students, and he hopes this is the beginning of many other celebrations across communities.

“We’d like to use this success to advocate for other communities to have more intentional celebrations during their respective heritage month,” Flores said. “Sports will generally never have to worry about budget cuts or suppression in higher education, so we hope NU Athletics continues to leverage on behalf of different historically excluded student populations.”
