Former Olympics gold medallists Neeraj Chopra from India and Arshad Nadeem from Pakistan have set up a mouth-watering clash in the men’s javelin final at the World Athletics Championships 2025 in Tokyo on Thursday. This will be the first time that the two Asian giants will face off after the Paris Olympics 2024 final where Nadeem stunned reigning champion Neeraj to bag gold while the Indian had to settle for silver medal.
This time around Neeraj took the ‘one and done’ approach to reach the javelin final at the Worlds event. With his very first throw, Neeraj Chopra cleared the automatic qualification mark of 84.5m from Group A with a 84.85m throw. His Pakistan counterpart on the other hand, needed three tries to make the final – throwing the javelin to 85.28m mark off his third and final attempt to make the final.
Nadeem had won gold in Paris with a monster throw of 92.97m, while Chopra had a best of 89.45m that night. The Pakistan star has come into the World Athletics event after competing in just one tournament in the whole of 2025, winning gold in the Asian Championships in Korea in May. He then underwent a knee surgery in July.
India’s Sachin Yadav also joined Chopra in the finals as second Indian after his 83.67m effort placed him at sixth in Group A and 10th overall. Two other Indians, Rohit Yadav and Yashvir Singh missed out after finishing 28th and 30th respectively out of 37 competitors in Group A and Group B together.
In the last edition of the Worlds in 2023, India had three javelin throwers in the finals with Kishore Jena and DP Manu finishing fifth and sixth respectively while Chopra won the gold.
“I feel really good that I achieved automatic qualification in first round. Tomorrow is the main day. This is the main competition (of the year),” Chopra was quoted as saying by ‘Olympic Khel’ website.
“I feel good (coming into World Championships). I crossed 90m this year and am working on my technique (with coach Jan Zelezny). I just need to stay healthy and focussed for final. I am ready.”
Nadeem, on the other hand, had a shocking start with a 76.99m throw and followed it up with 74.17m. It appeared that Nadeem, who had also won a silver in the last edition in 2023 behind Chopra, would not make it to the finals.
Neeraj had been clubbed with German star Julian Weber, who topped Group A and was second overall with a throw of 87.21m, 2012 Olympic champion Keshorn Walcott of Trinidad and Tobago, last edition bronze winner Jakub Vadlejch of Czech Republic and Sachin in the 19-man Group A on Wednesday.
Two-time world champion Anderson Peters topped the qualification round with a season best throw of 89.53m. Dawid Wegner (85.67m) of Poland also reached the finals as the third automatic qualifier from Group A. Besides Peters and Nadeem, Kenya’s Julius Yego (85.96m) and Curtis Thompson (84.72m) of USA crossed the automatic qualification mark from Group B.
Neeraj Chopra is aiming to become third male javelin thrower in history to defend his title. Czech legend Zelezny (1993, 1995) and Peters (2019, 2022) are the other two who have won the crown on two consecutive occasions.
