Men's Basketball
The University of Saint Mary Men's Basketball team went 0-1 this past week, losing to Sterling College 69-57. Forward Deshaud St. Martin led the Spires offensively with 19 points, while Sophomore Joey Schultz had a team-high seven rebounds. Sterling shot 47% from the field, with USM shooting 28%. The Spire's defense did force 17 turnovers, but it was not enough to beat the Warriors. Saint Mary will travel to take on Tabor College at 8 p.m. on Wednesday in Hillsboro, Kansas.

Women's Basketball
The Saint Mary Women's Basketball team went 0-1 this past week, falling to Sterling College, 92-78. Tanea Sims, Paige Pendley, and Alanis Delgado scored in double-digit figures to combine for 53 of the Spire's 78 points. The Spires shot 46% from the field, while Sterling shot 52%. Saint Mary will travel to Tabor College for a mid-week matchup against the Blue Jays at 6 p.m. on Wednesday in Hillsboro, Kansas.

Men's Wrestling
Men's Wrestling traveled to Oklahoma Wesleyan on Tuesday for the OKWU Shootout. The Spires went 2-1 on the day, beating Wayland Baptist University and Central Baptist College. Saint Mary had four wins by fall, coming from Brody Gee, Freddie Barajas, Austin Almaguer, and Johnny Cash Thomas in their victory over Wayland Baptist. Against Central Baptist College, Ethan Woods won his match at 133 by major decision with a score of 11-2. Almaguer got his second win of the night via fall in the 149-weight class, and Gabe Chesbro also won his match at 184 by fall. Saint Mary will compete in the Missouri Valley Open on Friday and Saturday in Marshall, Missouri.

Spires Go 2-1 in OKWU Shootout
Women's Wrestling
Women's Wrestling went 2-2 in team duals this past week with wins over William Jewell and Ottawa University. On Wednesday, William Jewell, Alisha Van Scoy, Araya Boday, Daisy Scholz, Hannah Crowson, and Rebekah Koolstra all got wins to give Saint Mary a huge 40-8 win over the Cardinals. Then at the York Duals on Friday, the Spires had another dominant performance over the Ottawa Braves. Van Scoy, Boday, Teya Villalpando, and Lessley Sandoval secured wins via fall to beat the Braves 41-4. Boday finished the week with an impressive performance on Saturday at the York Open, winning the championship in the 130-weight class. The Spires will take on Friends University on January 25 in Wichita, Kansas.

Indoor Track & Field
Men's and Women's Indoor Track and Field competed in the Scott Nisely Invite at Crete, Nebraska this weekend. Mark Noel opened the day with the Spire's first podium appearance, running a 7.02 in the 60-meter dash and placing third. Noel also took fourth place with a time of 22.98 in the 200-meter race. In that same race, Torrey White ran a 22.74, coming in second place for Saint Mary. White later took first place with a time of 51.02 in the 400-meter dash. The Spires had a strong showing in the 1000-meter race having runners coming in first, third, and fourth. Liam Neidig took first place with a time of 2:32.89, Robert Huebert (2:34.27), and Dawson Adams (2:41.92) were right behind Neidig in third and fourth place. In the field events, Tony Kinser took second place in the high jump event with a mark of 2.04 meters.
On the women's side of things, Gretchen Raney ran an 8.02 in the 60-meter race to open the day she placed fourth. In the 60-meter hurdles event, Samantha Colson placed third with a time of 9.66, the first podium appearance of the day for the women's team. In the longer-distance races, Maddy Walter-Sherretts (3:06.38) and Riley Hiebert (3:09.62) finished first and second in the 1000-meter race. The one-mile race was possibly the best event of the day for the Spires, with Alyssa Armendariz (5:04.19) taking first place, Riley Hiebert (5:07.79) in second, Walter-Sherretts (5:16.05) in third, and Reagan Hiebert (5:16.16) coming in fourth. In the field events for the women, Carissa Martin managed a top-ten finish in sixth place after recording a mark of 10.39 meters. The Spires will be competing at Northwest Missouri State on Saturday in Maryville, Missouri.

Men's and Women's Track and Field Have Strong Showing in First Meet of 2023
Swimming
Men's and Women's teams went 1-1 this past week, falling to William Jewell and beating Simpson College. On Friday, Blake Jorgens, Matthew Hall, Neena Lorenz, Grace Sanford, Sydney Jones, and Ayla Pierce won multiple individual events. The Men's team also won the 200yd medley-relay to open the meet. The Spires will meet Sterling College for a KCAC matchup at 1 p.m. on Friday in Hutchinson, Kan.
