Volleyball

The Spires went 1-1 this past week with a comeback victory against Sterling College (27-29, 24-26, 25-15, 25-20, 16-14) and a loss to Kansas Wesleyan (28-30, 25-27, 14-25). Their record is now 17-13 overall and 5-5 in the KCAC. The Spires got down early to Sterling in their mid-week matchup but rallied for a memorable comeback victory. Ainsley Gardner had 13 kills, while Emma Prothe had seven service aces in the win. Saint Mary lost two very close sets to Kansas Wesleyan on Saturday, giving the Coyotes all the momentum, they would need heading into the third set. Saint Mary came out aggressive for the final set as they made it a close game with a six-point run, but the Spires ultimately could not keep up with the Coyote's offensive production as they lost the set 25-14. Gardner led the Spires with 14 kills on the night, while Haydan Heuerman had 27 assists. The Spires will hit the road to take on York University at 7 p.m. on Wednesday in York, Nebraska.

Men's Soccer

The men's soccer team went 2-0 this week, beating Bethel College and the Friends Falcons, the Spires finished the regular season 11-3-3 overall and 8-2-2 in conference play. The mid-week matchup against the Threshers ended in a 4-0 win. After a scoreless first half Paul Trejo scored to make it 1-0. Saint Mary later took advantage of a free kick as Romario Harding scored for the Spires to make it a 2-0 game. Just two minutes later, Harding scored again for Saint Mary as he was assisted by Alvaro Mercado, to make it 3-0. Anthony Rangel assisted Guilherme Caldas with the final goal of the day giving the Spires a comfortable 4-0 win. On Saturday, Trejo got the Spires off to a fast start scoring in the first two minutes of the game, giving Saint Mary an early 1-0 lead. Right before halftime, Caldas extended the Spires lead to 2-0 after burying a cross from Trejo in the back of the net. Friends cut the Spire's lead to 2-1 after an early goal to start the second half. Saint Mary had an answer with fifteen minutes to go, as Harding dribbled around multiple defenders in the box and finished with a goal, giving the Spires a 3-1 lead. Friends would get one more goal late in the game, but the Saint Mary defense held, securing the 3-2 win. Saint Mary will host Sterling College for the first round of the KCAC tournament at 4 p.m. on Saturday at Charles J. Berkel Memorial Stadium.

Spires Notch Seventh Straight Win on Senior Day

Women's Soccer went 1-1 on the week after losing to Bethel College 6-1 and winning on senior day against Friends University 3-2. Saint Mary finished the regular season at 6-10-1 and 6-5-1 in the KCAC. The Threshers applied constant offensive pressure on Saint Mary throughout the game and with halftime approaching, rattled off three goals plus another late goal to make it a 4-0 lead. After another Bethel goal made it 5-0, Saint Mary was able to score in the second half as Grace Runyan scored after a botched clearance from Bethel. On Saturday, the Spires pulled off a 2-0 comeback victory, beating Friends in the final minutes of play. The game started fast for the Falcons after they scored a goal within the first two minutes of the game to give them the 1-0 lead. Just fourteen minutes later, Friends scored again to take a controlling 2-0 lead over the Spires. The rest of the half featured great defensive play by both teams as the game went into halftime with Saint Mary down 2-0. The seniors stepped up for Saint Mary in the second half as Morgan Young found the back of the net to put the Spires on the board eight minutes into the half, putting them within one. Kylie Wilson scored a goal of her own to tie the game at 2-2 ten minutes after Youngs. As time was running out, Young assisted Katy St. Martin for the go-ahead goal with only two minutes remaining to help seal the 3-2 win. That win secured the Spires a spot in the KCAC tournament, Saint Mary will take on Southwestern in round one at 7 p.m. on Friday in Winfield, Kansas.

The first quarter started strong for Saint Mary as a McPherson fumble was recovered by Angelo Trujillo, who ran it in for a touchdown to give them the early 7-0 lead. Towards the end of the first quarter, a mistake by the Spire's punting unit allowed for a blocked punt return for a touchdown. This put the Bulldogs on the board, making it a 7-7 tie. As teams continued to trade punts, McPherson drove down the field right before halftime to give them the 14-7 lead. A field goal by Felipe Uriarte made the score 14-10, and the momentum carried on into the following kickoff. Aidan Arnold recovered a McPherson fumble, giving the Spires good field position. The ensuing Spires possession stalled, giving the ball back to McPherson. The Bulldogs extended their lead late in the fourth quarter, scoring on a reverse play that made it 21-10.

Men's Basketball

The men's Basketball opened their 2022-23 campaign this week at the Ottawa Invitational, going 1-1. On Friday the Spires took on Haskell Indian Nations. Saint Mary got ahead early in the first half and, after five minutes, had a seven-point lead over the Fightin' Indians. With just under ten minutes to go, Saint Mary extended the lead to eleven, making the score 27-16. As the half came to a close, Haskell chipped away, leaving Saint Mary with a 39-36 lead entering halftime. In the second half, the Spires continued to make baskets and kept Haskell out of rhythm on defense, building another eleven-point lead at 55-44. At the midway point of the second half, Braylen Duncan made two free throws to give the Spires a comfortable 60-46 lead over Haskell. The Fightin' Indians attempted to come back late and threaten the Saint Mary lead like they did to end the first half. However, the Spire defense held strong, and the game ended in an 88-80 victory. The Spires will conclude the Ottawa Invitational Against Kansas Christian College at 5 p.m. on Saturday in Ottawa, Kansas.

Men's and Women's Swim

The University of Saint Mary Men's and Women's Swim team traveled to Wichita this weekend for the two-day Sterling-Barton Tri-Meet. The meet was not scored as a team competition, but the Spires were able to push through adversity when swimming tired in their first two-day meet of the year. The Women's team had multiple first-place finishes this weekend. Olivia Ringle led the Spires with three first-place finishes on the weekend in the 100-yard butterfly and the 200 and 500-yard freestyle. Grace Sanford and Ayla Pierce placed first and second in the 100-yard backstroke. Kelsey Taylor took first in the 1,000 and 500-yard freestyle races. Pierce also took first in the 1650-yard freestyle race. On the men's side, there were also quite a few first-place finishers throughout the weekend. Matt Hall was one of the first Spires to take first place this weekend in the 200-yard freestyle. After that, Blake Jorgens and Weston Hutchings came in first and second in the 50-yard breaststroke. Luke Taylor and Landon Adamo rounded out the day, placing first and second in the 100-yard backstroke. The Spires will compete in the Morningside Invite on November 12th in Sioux City, Iowa.
