Volleyball 

The Spires went 1-1 this past week, losing to Bethel College and then defeating Friends University. They now have an overall record of 16-12 and a 4-4 record in the KCAC. The Spires traveled to Bethel for a mid-week matchup that resulted in a three-set loss. Rylee Kenitzer had nine kills, while Haydan Heuermann had 14 Assists in the loss. Saint Mary bounced back for a great win on Saturday, beating Friends in four sets. Friends came out aggressive for the fourth set as they made it a close game with a four-point run of their own. Saint Mary answered back with a five-point run taking a 12-5 lead. The Spires were then set up comfortably as they ended the set winning 25-18 and winning the match 3-1. Kenitzer led the Spires with 17 kills on the day, while Heuermann had 38 assists. The Spires will be at home to take on Sterling College at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the Ryan Sports Center.

Men's Soccer

Men's soccer went 2-0 this week, beating Bethany College and Avila University. This makes Spires 9-3-3 overall now and 6-2-2 in conference play. The mid-week matchup against the Eagles ended in a 6-2 win as Paul Trejo, Shamari Hibbert, Anthony Rangel, Kolby Shuck, and Guilherme Caldas all scored goals. Rangel led the Spires on offense with two goals and two assists. On Saturday, Romario Harding scored twice for Saint Mary as they sealed a 2-0 victory over Bethany. Saint Mary will look to add to their winning streak this week as they hit the road to play against Bethel College at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday in North Newton, Kansas.

Spires Win Fifth Straight After Home Victory

Women's Soccer

Women's Soccer also had another strong week and extended their winning streak to four games after beating Avila Wednesday on the road 1-0 and Bethany College 2-1 at home on Saturday. The Spires applied constant offensive pressure on the Eagles throughout the game and as halftime was approaching Morgan Young found the back of the net to give Saint Mary the 1-0 lead. Avila was not able to score in the second half as the Spires held on for a 1-0 victory. Saturday Saint Mary went down early to the Swedes, giving up a goal in the first ten minutes of play. Shortly after the Bethany goal Erin Walden got the Spires on the board after a free kick tied things up at 1-1. Young gave Saint Mary the lead just after halftime and the Spires held on to the seal the 2-1 win over the Swedes. Saint Mary will travel to take on Bethel College on Wednesday at 5 p.m. in North Newton, Kansas.

Women's Soccer Beats Avila for Third Straight Win

Both teams were held scoreless in the first quarter of Saturday's action. Avila found the end zone twice in the second quarter to make it 14-0 with less than five minutes to go. The Spires responded with a touchdown as Erick Covington found Josh Walker for a 37-yard score. Avila then drove down the field in a hurry to attempt a field goal, but it was blocked by Jaxon Curtis. Landon Beecham recovered the blocked kick and returned it to the end zone as time expired to tie the game at 14-14 heading into halftime. The second half started with both teams trading punts until Avila capitalized on a Spire turnover to give them a 21-14 lead. Avila recovered the onside kick to help set them up for another score to put them up 28-14. A Spires turnover on the ensuing possession set the Eagles up for another score, giving Avila a 34-14 lead. Saint Mary started the fourth quarter with a touchdown as Covington found Walker for a three-yard touchdown to make it 34-21. Covington threw for 106 yards and had two touchdowns on the day. Defensively Aidan Arnold led Saint Mary with 12 tackles, including a tackle for loss. The Spires will hit the road next week as they take on McPherson at 1 p.m. on Saturday in McPherson, Kansas.

Football Comes Up Short Against Avila

Cross Country

The men and women both had strong performances this weekend in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in the NAIA Regional Meet which is one of the biggest events of the season. There were two events for both the men and women, a maroon group and a white group. The men took third in the maroon group and first in the white group, while the women placed second in the maroon and third in the white. Liam Neidig ran the best time of the weekend for the men with a 24:40.1 and placing fifth out of 239 runners in the maroon group. Riley Hiebert ran the fastest for the women this weekend with a time of 17.37.1 and placed fourth overall out of 214 runners. The Spires will get ready for the KCAC Championships that are being held on Saturday, November 5, in Winfield, Kansas.
