Volleyball 

The Spires are now 8-8 on the season after last week's contests. Their mid-week matchup on the road against Benedictine ended in just three sets and a loss for Saint Mary. Over the weekend, the Spires went on the road for the Ottawa Invitational on Friday and Saturday. Saint Mary fell to Columbia College in a rematch after the Spire upset the Cougars in their home opener a few weeks ago. The match went all the way to five sets, but Saint Mary could not hold on for the win. In their second game of the day, Saint Mary took on Hastings and would only win one set against the Broncos, losing 3-1. On Saturday, Saint Mary played Doane University to finish the tournament in Ottawa. This was another close five-set battle for the Spires, with two of the sets going into overtime. Trying to close out the Tigers in set four, the Spires made a five-point run to comeback and force another overtime. Saint Mary did not hold on to win set four and dropped set five, they will open KCAC play against Tabor College at 7 p.m. on Wednesday in Hillsboro, Kan.

Men's Soccer

USM is now 4-1-1 after a very good showing last week. On Monday, the Spires traveled to Manhattan Christian College in their last match before beginning KCAC play on the weekend. The Spires got up early on the Thunder and continued the pressure all night as they cruised to a 10-1 win. Jose Nava led the team with two goals on the night. On Saturday, Saint Mary hit the road again to play Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas. All of the scoring took place in the first period of the game with the Spires going down 1-0 early, but goals from Paul Trejo and Guilherme Caldas gave Saint Mary the 2-1 lead right before the half. The Spires held on in the second half to walk out of Winfield 1-0 in the KCAC. They will host McPherson College at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Charles J. Berkel Memorial Stadium.

Women's Soccer

After last week's contests, the Spires are now 0-6 overall and 0-1 in the KCAC. On Wednesday, the Spires played William Woods University in Fulton, Missouri. Saint Mary started slow, giving up three quick goals to the Owls. The Spires held William Woods scoreless for the rest of the half and began the second period down 3-0. A late goal for the Owls gave them the 4-0 lead and a win over Saint Mary. On Saturday, the women traveled with the men to Winfield, Kansas, to take on Southwestern College. Giving up just one goal in the first half, the Spires were in pressing to tie the contest up. Just after halftime, Saint Mary evened things up after Katy St. Martin got the Spires on the board making it 1-1. However, the Builders would answer with three late goals to seal a 4-1 victory over Saint Mary. The Spires will host McPherson College at 5 p.m. on Wednesday at Charles J. Berkel Memorial Stadium.

Football

The Spires fell to Southwestern College on Saturday, making their overall record 1-2 and 1-1 in the KCAC. After a close first quarter that saw no scoring, the Builders got on the board after a blocked punt for a touchdown and a field goal, giving them a 10-0 lead. The Spires answered with a long touchdown run by Jartavious Martin and another by quarterback Erick Covington that made the score 14-10, in favor of Saint Mary, with time dwindling in the first half. Right before halftime, the Builders scored one more touchdown to make it 17-14. The Spires gave up the ball twice early in the second half, but the defense was able to hold the Builders offense to just two field goals, making it 23-14, with under 10 minutes to go in the quarter. Southwestern scored one more touchdown and a safety, making the final score 32-14. Martin led the Spires with 114 rushing yards and a touchdown on the day. Defensively, Hennessey Thomas had three tackles for loss, a sack, a pass break-up, and 16 total tackles. Saint Mary will be on the road this weekend to play Friends University at 6 p.m. on Saturday in Wichita, Kansas.

Cross Country

The University of Saint Mary Cross Country Teams ran at the Southern Stampede Saturday morning hosted by Missouri Southern State University in Joplin, Mo. The women's eighth-place finish was led by Riley Hiebert, finishing 14 with a new school record, running a 17:37 in the 5 Kilometer race. Next for the Spires were Reagan Hiebert and Maddy Walter-Sherretts, placing 39 and 50. Rounding out the scoring for the Spires were Kate Madsen and Mallory Gallet finishing 67 and 101, respectively. The men's fifth-place finish was led by Elvis Rojas-King, finishing 26. Following Rojas-King, the Spire's had a tight pack, with their top five finishers separated by a total of 24 seconds. The pack consisted of Liam Neidig, Brendan Erwin, Ryan Heline, and Brig Merritt, finishing, 31,35, 40, and 46, respectively. The Spire will run at the Gan's Creek Classic on September 30, hosted by The University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri.
