As swimming winds down in the Tokyo Olympics, track and field is getting into gear.

A few medals have already been handed out, with Ethiopia’s Selemon Barega taking the men’s 10,000 meters and Sweden’s Daniel Stahl winning men’s discus. On the women’s side, Elaine Thompson-Herah took the 100 meters for Jamaica — and broke Florence Griffith Joyner’s 33-year-old Olympic record.

The first gold in a new event — the 4×400 relay for teams of two men and two women — went to Poland, in an upset. The United States team, which was favored, took bronze.

Here are some of the best images from the competition.
