Duke Alum Gives $6 Million To Athletic Department
A large and generous gift that will make a big difference for Duke athletics.
Former Duke fencer Matt Andresen, dismayed by the impact Covid has had on spring sports, has donated $6 million to the athletic department.
The funds will primarily go to support non-revenue spring sports which were canceled last year, but an endowment honoring CB Claiborne, the first Black basketball player at Duke, will also be created. Now that’s long overdue and something we’d think anyone would be pleased to have their name associated with.
This is what Andresen said about his gift and why it was needed: “When the world shut down, it did not take much imagination to realize that this was going to have a profound impact on the student experience and with student-athletes. Those are the times where you’re needed. People have to step up. I’m not the only one, but I felt certainly an obligation to be one of those people.”
Andresen graduated from Duke in the 1990s and has been in finance. Currently he’s the CEO of Headlands Technologies and clearly has done very well.
By the way, Andresen, a Chapel Hill native, was also a four-time All-American fencer.
