2021 MLB season has arrived!

Baseball is back! The 2021 MLB season is here, and for now the plan is for it to be mostly normal after the coronavirus pandemic heavily affected last summer’s campaign. There will be 162 games, and there will be over 12,000 fans in the Coliseum stands Thursday night for Opening Day, with that capacity expected to grow as time goes on.

But if you’re not one of those lucky 12K, then you’ll need another way to watch the action, or at least listen to it. After all, this is not an A’s season you’ll want to miss.

Coming off their third straight .600 winning percentage, their third straight postseason trip, and their first playoff series victory since 2006, this year’s squad might be the best we’ve seen yet from this current core. Some stars are back to health and/or re-motivated after underperformance, some rookies and prospects are primed for improvements or breakouts, and there’s a dynamic new bullpen to carry the torch from last year’s lockdown crew. And Jed Lowrie is back!

Can Oakland finally make a run at the World Series and win a ring during the Billy Beane Era? The journey begins tonight, against the Houston Astros team that knocked Oakland out of their last attempt in the 2020 ALDS, now sans star outfielder George Springer. A few links:

In tonight’s opener, Chris Bassitt takes the mound for Oakland, looking to back up a breakout season that earned him votes for Cy Young. The Astros go with veteran ace Zack Greinke, who is still rolling entering age 37 but did get knocked around by Oakland last October.
