Cochise baseball drops two in home series

The Cochise baseball team dropped back-to-back games versus New Mexico Military Institute (NMMI) on Saturday. Cochise lost 4-0 in the first game and 6-5 in the second game. They struggled to produce offensively in game one after giving up a three-run home run in the first inning. The Apaches did not commit a single error in the game and out hit New Mexico Military Institute six to three. Jimmy DeLeon, Makai Desoto, Cameron Crotte, Gerardo Hernandez, Aaron Marsh, and Edarny Martinez all collected one hit. Joseph Sinclair took the loss for the Apaches after throwing two innings, giving up three runs on two hits, recording three strikeouts and one walk. First out of the pen was Nate Rohlicek. In his three innings of work, he struck out four, and gave up one run, on a solo home run. Treyjen Meza came in last for the Apaches, recording five strikeouts, one walk, and no hits in his two innings out of the pen.

In the second game of the doubleheader, a pitching duel was in the making early. Cochise got on the board first, scoring three in the fourth and one in the fifth. Ismail Pontiac and Jose Velazquez together put up six straight zeros for the Apaches on the mound. Pontiac went three innings, no hits and six strikeouts. Velazquez was second in the game for Cochise. He went three innings, no hits and two strikeouts. In the top of the seventh, with Angel Ortiz on the mound, Cochise committed an error, hit by a pitch, and passed the ball. NMMI had a chance to climb back into it after scoring three. Cochise tacked on one more run in the bottom of seventh; however, NMMI quickly responded and tied it up with two runs of their own in the top of the eighth inning. 

NMMI took the lead in the top of the ninth inning, scoring one run, as the Apaches recorded three errors. The Apaches again out-hit New Mexico Military Institute, eight to five, in the six to five loss in game two of the doubleheader. Ethan Silcox led the Apaches with four hits, and the other four came from Cameron Pehrson, DeLeon, Fernando Brazoban and Martinez. 

The Cochise College baseball team now has a win/loss record of four and two in non-conference games. 

Next up

The Cochise College baseball team will play at home in Douglas on Friday, Feb. 19, and Saturday, Feb. 20 against Utah State Eastern. The four game non-conference series starts at 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. on both days.
