Women’s Basketball out to Defend ACCAC and Region 1 Championships

0 16

As the 2019-20 season begins, the Cochise College Women’s Basketball team looks to build on the success of previous teams, coached by Laura Hughes. Last year, the Apaches recorded the most wins in college history at 28-4. The team won the Arizona Athletic Community College Conference (ACCAC) Championship and the Region One tournament championship for the third year in a row. They also participated for the third year in the National Championship held in Lubbock, TX. The Apaches finished the season as one of the top teams in the country. Players were named to the All-Conference, All-Region, and All-American Teams.

Three returning sophomores for the 2019-20 season will look to add experience and leadership to the Apaches, Kayla Harris, Raena Suggs, and Janessa Johnson. Sophomore transfers Vinisha Sherrod and Jahnisha Brown will also look to make an impact this season.

Plenty of new faces will also be making their debut for the Apaches.  The Freshman class includes an active and skilled group: Tiffany Amos, Sharmayne Finley, Rebecca Leveque, Madison McCabe, Simone Millot, Nikya Orange, Sharon Preci, Manon Sainte Luce, Taylor Salazar, Chrissy Thames, and Starr Walker.

The Apaches will look to play an up-tempo style and outwork their opponents with a balanced team effort. The team will always work hard, play together, and positively represent Cochise College.

The 2019-20 season will bring a tough and demanding schedule. The non-conference team from Texas and Utah will provide a good challenge for the Lady Apaches. The Arizona Community College Athletic Conference is once again a premier league in the NJCAA. Nationally ranked teams from the ACCAC appear in both the NJCAA Division I and Division II polls.
