Just like when he was a little kid, Matt Chapman will be pitched to by his dad tonight.

The 26-year-old third baseman got his first All-Star nod this season after finishing seventh-place finish in the 2018 voting. The game takes place at Cleveland’s Progressive Field.

Chapman’s the first Oakland player to make the derby since Yoenis Cespedes won back-to-back titles in 2013 and 2014. He’ll be joined by Ronald Acuña Jr., Pete Alonso, Josh Bell, Alex Bregman, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Joc Pederson and Carlos Santana. Cespedes hit 17 homers in the first round at Yankee Stadium in 2013.

The trophy and the $1 million prize went to Mets slugger Pete Alonso, who beat out fellow rookie Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in the final round. But Guerrero put together a 91-homer slugfest and had two of the best Derby rounds of all time.

When he heard the news, the first person Chapman called was his dad. Back in the days when Jim Chapman threw batting practice to his son, he’d say he wanted to be the pitcher if Matt ever got to the Home Run Derby.

Father and son strategized and came up with this, but it wasn’t enough to win the competition.

“I just told him to throw it right down the middle,” Chapman said. “The strategy that’s coming to my head is to tell my Dad rapid fire. I’m going to try to get as many swings as possible.”

While playing little league and growing up in Orange County’s Trabuco Canyon, Chapman never dreamed he would be in the derby.

“Speaking of dreams come true, that’s my dad’s dream right there,” Chapman said. “When I was a little kid, we’d watch the Home Run Derby. I don’t think in a million years we thought I’d be in a home run derby.”
