There will be a gold-medal coach for the Gold Medal Coaching Seminar in September.

Doug Beal, who coached the U.S. men’s volleyball team in three Summer Olympics including a gold-medal finish in Los Angeles in 1984, has been announced as the headlining coach at the Winnipeg Wesmen Gold Medal Coaching Seminar slated for Sept. 6.

Beal, a five-time all-American as a player at Ohio State University, is a member of OSU’s Hall of Fame and the International Volleyball Hall of Fame. In 1984, he became the first coach to lead the U.S. to an Olympic gold when the Americans defeated Brazil.

Beal later went on to serve as the head of USA Volleyball from 2005 to 2017.

In total, 10 coaches — eight of them with university coaching experience — will present during the one-day seminar. The coaches include Wesmen women’s coach Diane Scott, Wesmen men’s assistant Phil Hudson, former Wesmen and Olympic team coach Mike Burchuk, Selkirk varsity girls coach and former Wesmen Kyla Michalski, Dalhousie women’s coach Rick Scott, Brandon men’s coach Grant Wilson, Ryerson women’s assistant and former national team member Adam Simac, former Olympian Michelle Sawatzky-Koop, and Manitoba Bisons women’s coach Ken Bentley.

Cost of the seminar, which will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., is $150 with an early-bird rate of $135 if you register before June 30.
