The fallout is likely to be intense

The Adidas corruption trial reached its zenith Wednesday with all three defendants found guilty.

Somewhat hilariously on Wednesday, Adidas and Louisville announced an initiative that will be “focused on building ethical leadership in college athletics.”

Also on Wednesday, revelations that football player Kemari Averett played despite rape allegations.

In fairness to Averett, he firmly denies the charges, saying that he has not been in touch with his accuser for four months (they had a previous relationship), claims an alibi and says he has more proof that he has not yet made public.

Complicating the picture are other charges that he recently put a gun to a woman’s head.

That will all presumably get sorted out by the courts but for Louisville, even if you only consider PR and current circumstances (and there is a lot more to consider here), it’s just more bad news and more trouble for an already troubled athletic department. And it’s worth mentioning that football coach Bobby Petrino is hardly the model of male probity.

Details about the initiative will be announced Thursday but may we suggest that they name it the CYA Foundation?

If Louisville really wanted to make a point they’d break their contract with Adidas.

Meanwhile, Jim Larranaga’s Miami program appears to have been vindicated and Kansas, anticipating NCAA action, will sit Silvio DeSousa.

And the university is correct: the NCAA doesn’t have subpoena powers but in this case won’t need them. A lot of information is in the record and Kansas, along with several other schools, is in the crosshairs. So stay tuned.
