Stephen Drew announces retirement

The 12-year veteran spent time with five teams.

Infielder Stephen Drew has retired, according to Chelsea Janes of the Washington Post. Drew was at the Nationals’ game in Atlanta on Monday night to see his former Washington teammates.

Drew, who recently turned 35, retires with a career .252/.318/.423 line and 123 homers in 12 major-league seasons with the Diamondbacks (2006-12), Athletics (2012), Red Sox (2013-14), Yankees (2014-15) and Nationals (2016-17). He won a World Series with Boston in 2013, becoming the second Drew brother to do so after J.D.’s title in 2007.

Drew appeared in only 46 games for the Nats last year in what would turn out to be his final campaign, hitting .253/.302/.358 while seeing time at second base, shortstop and third base. He’s one of many veterans to be sent into retirement this winter, partially due to the slow free-agent market that has forced out much of the game’s middle class.
