Watsonians win Club Trophy bronze in Lambersart

0 6

Watsonians took bronze on their first European voyage of the season as they finished third at the EuroHockey Indoor Club Trophy in Lambersart, France, two places ahead of fellow EHL side Railway Union.

For the Scots, they produced a superb initial group phase with a narrow 4-3 win over home side Iris Hockey Lambersart, 7-2 against Gaziantep Doruk and then eliminated Railway from the title reckoning with a 7-3 success.

In that tie, it was nip and tuck throughout the first half but Watsonians ran up four goals in a row to assure their place in the top four promotion pool.

There, however, they came unstuck against eventual champions AHTC Wien 4-0 on Saturday evening.

That result left their destiny out of their own hands and they were duly unable to jump up into the top two by the time their final game came along.

AHTC fell 2-1 to Iris, a result which meant the Scots could not get enough from their final fixture to move up into the top two.

Nonetheless, they still needed a result for the bronze medal and they duly got it with a 3-3 against Lithuania’s Šiauliai Ginstrektė-Akademija.

For Railway, they overcame a slow start in the competition to defeat SG Amsicora 4-2 and then ran up a 6-0 result against HC Olten to retain Ireland’s place in the second tier for 2027.

Both Watsonians and Railway Union will play in the EHL FINALS in Den Bosch at Easter.
