Léo looking to find fluidity in Belgian league
Royal Léopold will be looking to build up their early season form when they take on bottom-ranked Herakles on Sunday in the Belgian men’s Carlsberg 0.0 League.
While they sit in a share of top spot with Gantoise after four rounds of matches with three wins and a draw to their name, it has not been plain-sailing so far. It follows narrow single-goal wins over Beershot, Pingouin and KHC Dragons along with a 3-3 home draw with Uccle.
It leads up to an EHL date with HC Wien on October 9th in the KO16 in Barcelona where they will hope to pursue a third successive ticket to the FINAL8.
Their strikers are firing with Tom Boon (four goals) and Gaspard Baumgarten (five goals) and, along with José Basterra and Nelson Onana, they have an irresistible forward line.
Beyond them, the likes of Gauthier Boccard, Corentin De Trez, Dylan Englebert, Dimitri Cuvelier, Tanguy Zimmer and Romain Henet have been the backbone of the side for a while.
This season, Spanish international Alejandro Alonso is the big signing this summer, making the moving from Racing Santander.
Moving on, last season’s captain John Verdussen has retired from the first team having been part of each of Léo’s EHL campaigns dating back to 2012.
Nicolas Poncelet will play with Club de Campo de Madrid this season. Elliot van Strydonck has gone to Racing Club de Bruxelles.
On the coaching front, Jill Boon links up with the side to be T3 and will be there in support of Max Bertrand.
This is their ninth EHL season with their best outcome in 2021 when they got bronze in the Wagener Stadium.
