East Grinstead and Old Georgians land English crowns

East Grinstead and Old Georgians won the English indoor titles in front of strong crowds at the Derby velodrome.

EG took the first of the crowns in an assured 6-1 final win over first time finalists Surbiton. The Londoners did take the lead through Ruth Gordon but it was short-lived as Lauren Workman equalised.

Amy Thompson gave them the lead before the end of the first quarter and they never gave up that advantage. A Laura Myers stroke edged them further clear before a final quarter flourish from Chloe Brown, Biba Mills and a second from Thompson brought up their half-dozen.

East Ginstead’s captain, Chloe Brown, said: “We’re ecstatic, we couldn’t ask for anything better. I felt like we dominated from the start and kept control, they had early chances but so did we. Sticking to the game plan was important and we did that. Europe next year now, we’re super excited.”

It was followed up by a replay of the 2023 final with Old Georgians facing Wimbledon in a tightly contested, high tempo decider.

Wimbledon led at 1-0 and 2-1 before James Carson’s cool finish equalised at half-time. The dons went in front once more through Rory Patterson before OGs made their move, Tom Carson levelling and then his brother James completed his hat trick for 4-3.

Wimbledon levelled the game for a fourth time with five minutes left but Old Georgians snatched the result in the dying moments.

Tom Carson grabbed the all-important goal for 5-4 and then yet another of his family, Ed, gave the extra insurance to be crowned Super 6s champions.

 Old Georgians captain, Dan Shingles, said: “Always a tight one against Wimbledon, every match whether it be indoors or outdoors over the last couple of years have always been close and today was no different. They have such quality back to front, so we had to work really hard to break them down. 

“We’ve been building on from last year’s disappointment, so to come back this year and turn it around is pretty exciting and special for the guys.”
