Undefeated super welterweight Isaac “Puro México” Lucero (18-0, 14 KOs) of La Paz, Baja California, Mexico squares off against Ismael Flores (17-1-1, 12 KOs) of Barcelona, Spain, by way of Argentina, this Saturday night on the Zurdo Ramirez vs. David Benavidez PBC on Prime Pay-Per-View from the T-Mobile Arena. We caught up with the undefeated fighter as he talked about his upcoming pay-per-view fight.

“This is an important fight for my career. I’m on a pay-per-view card and I’m preparing well for this fight. I’m going up against a tough fighter,” Isaac Lucero told Fightnews.com. “This fight represents a dream come true and a step closer to fulfilling my goals and objectives. Every fight is a challenge, and we shall see how it goes.”

Fighting on a card of this magnitude only adds excitement and luster for the 27-year-old Lucero as he gets set for his first pay-per-view fight on Cinco de Mayo weekend, a festive boxing weekend that commemorates Mexico’s victory in the Battle of Puebla.

“I’m so happy to be fighting on a card of this magnitude; for me it’s a dream. Fighting on these dates, there are a lot of expectations, and I plan on giving a good show to the fans,” Lucero said. “I’ve always worked hard to get to this point, but I never thought I would be on this stage. To be honest, I never watched any of the fights from before. I really wasn’t a boxing fan and just did my thing in the gym,” Lucero added.

Lucero gave his take on the card’s main event between Zurdo and Benavidez.

“The truth is it’s going to be a good fight. Benavidez is strong, he’s a machine. Zurdo is a good fighter. I think Benavidez can win because of his hand speed, but the fight is not an easy one,” Lucero said of the main event.

Having trained with respected trainer/manager Bob Santos in Las Vegas, Lucero comes well prepared for his pay-per-view debut.

“I have been training with Bob Santos here in Vegas. I have had two fights under him. I’m working hard 24/7, it’s all about boxing.”

Fighting outside his native Mexico for the fourth time, Lucero is seizing the opportunity to catapult his career.

Last year, Lucero recorded two spectacular wins, a second-round stoppage of Omar Valenzuela in his Las Vegas debut and an eighth-round stoppage of Roberto Valenzuela Jr. in his last fight in San Antonio.

“This fight is a challenge and a step closer to my goals,” Lucero said.

His opponent Flores will also be looking to shine in his U.S. debut, as he has fought his entire career in his adopted country of Spain. Flores is coming off a ninth-round stoppage of Oliver Quintana Sanchez last October.

“I really don’t know much about him, but I have the solution for fight night,” Lucero said about his opponent.

Already lurking in the super welterweight division, a potential shot at champion Xander Zayas or interim titlist undefeated Jaron “Boots” Ennis is possible. PBC stablemate and WBC super welterweight champion Sebastian Fundora is also among the top names in the division. Lucero, however, plans to take care of business this weekend but talked about some potential matchups down the line.

“A victory positions me closer to a world title. It’s a step closer. I’m not focused on any other fight, but every fight represents a step closer. I plan on getting the victory and fighting two or three more fights. I want an opportunity to fight for a world title; I must earn it. It’s not going to be given to me,” Lucero said. “All the champs are great. Zayas is a good fighter, Boots, Fundora is tall and difficult, Josh Kelly — but if I have the opportunity, I have what it takes to beat them,” Lucero added.

Lucero vs. Flores will be the second bout of the pay-per-view, as the undefeated fighter promises a victory.

“It will be a Mexican bash, what Cinco de Mayo is supposed to be. I’m preparing for a war and to give you all a great fight,” Lucero said. “I must make a statement every fight to show that I deserve a big fight. 154 has a lot of solid fighters; any fight against any of the champions will be an interesting one. If the fight goes ten, it goes. If the knockout comes, it comes.”
