On Friday afternoon (15.30 local time to be exact) a big, 2.5 meters, statue of former WBC, EBU and French champion Thierry Jacob will be unveiled. The statue by Elisabeth Cibot, a highly regarded artist, financed by the city of Calais (in the north of France), will be placed at the Saint Pierre Park in front of the City Hall.

The champ passed away December 20, 2024 at the age of 59 after a long time of illness. Jacob was a professional fighter from 1984 through 1994 with a record of 39-6. He won the French title at bantamweight in 1987, EBU title also at bantamweight in1990 and finally, at the third attempt, a world title, WBC version, in 1992 beating Mexican legend Daniel Zaragoza. He lost the title in his first defence to Tracy Harris Patterson and then challenged Wilfredo Vazquez for the WBA title twice but lost and retired after a win in his farewell fight.

In the evening there will be a Thierry Jacob Memorial at the Salle Edgar Quintet where he fought many of his biggest fights with two professional fights and eight featuring Olympic boxing.

Thierry Jacob and his family (father, brother and sons) made Calais a fighting city for decades.
