Daniels Stops Green In Bittersweet Upset To Win IBF/WBO Super Middleweight Titles
By Boxing Bob Newman
In a stunning and bittersweet upset, Lani Daniels shocked and stopped prohibitive favorite and defending champion Shadasia Green to win the unified IBF/WBO/Ring super middleweight titles.
Daniels used her unorthodox movement and punch selection to befuddle and outbox Green throughout the match. Green didn’t look well as she walked back to her corner at the end of round eight. When the bell rang for the start of round nine, Green barely moved out of her own corner. Daniels quickly pounced on her, driving Green into a neutral corner where she rained punches on the soon-to-be ex-champ.
Huge right hands landed one after another, prompting referee Eric Dali to rescue a defenseless Green from further punishment at 0:32 of the ninth.
Daniels’ celebration was tempered however, as Green was wincing and slipping into semi-consciousness in real time. As the ring-side physicians were tending to her, Green was slumped on the stool barely upright. Soon, the paramedics were in the ring, Green was on a stretcher and in the ambulance on her way to the hospital.
A subdued Daniels was grateful to her opponent for the opportunity and wished for her speedy and full recovery. Daniels was coming off two straight losses and won her third world championship in three different weight classes, ironically after first winning the IBF heavyweight title, then IBF light heavyweight title and now IBF/WBO super middleweight titles. She improves to 12-4-2, 2 KOs. Green falls to 16-2, 11 KOs.
*At the time of the posting of this article, it was being reported the Green was conscious and talking to doctors… a good sign.
