Previously unbeaten Japanese IBF#5 Katsuma Akitsugi (13-1, 4 KOs), 117.5, tasted his first setback as he dropped a majority decision (96-94 twice, 95-95) to Mexican warrior Jose Calderon (15-3, 6 KOs), 117.5, over ten hard-fought rounds on Saturday in Tokyo, Japan. Akitsugi, a Japanese southpaw, had been campaigning in US to remain unbeaten, but in his very first appearance here he failed to display his good form throughout the see-saw bout. It was the taller Mexican Calderon that adjusted Akitsugi’s aggressive but monotonous style in the second half and scored well with solid shots in later rounds. It was a close affair, but a couple of Japanese judges saw it for the more effective Calderon. The referee was Viney Martin.Promoter: Teiken Promotions
