Oguni Upsets Tapales In Ex-122lb Champs’ Encounter

Former IBF 122-pound champ Yukinori Oguni (24-4-3, 9 KOs), 123.5, scored an upset unanimous decision (96-94, 97-93, 98-92) over ex-WBA, IBF ruler Marlon “Nightmare” Tapales (41-5, 22 KOs), 123.75, over ten hard-fought rounds in Tokyo, Japan. The Filipino southpaw puncher Tapales had the upper hand in earlier rounds, but it was Oguni that showed his last surge by taking the initiative back down the stretch. Oguni’s continual body bombardments looked so effective that he obviously weakened the Filipino prefight favorite. This defeat might be a nightmare for Tapales who wished to win back a world belt.
