Apochi Wins NABF Cruiserweight Title In Houston
In a hard fought battle for the vacant NABF cruiserweight title, Efetobor Apochi edged previously undefeated Dariel Duquesne to snag the crown.
After losing the first two rounds, the shorter Apochi nailed the 6’5″ Duquesne with a hard left and had him on wobbly legs in the fourth. A follow-up right dropped Duquesne at the bell, but referee James Green waved the knockdown off as he deemed the punch a hair too late.
Duquesne did well to recover between rounds and claw his way back into the fight. The rounds were close and competitive throughout. In the end the three Houston judges scored it 95-95 and 96-94 twice for the Nigerian-born Apochi by majority decision. He improves to 14-3, 13 KOs, winning the first decision of his career. Cuban native Duquesne loses his first, now 14-1, 11 KOs. The Christy Martin promoted Apochi is looking to get right back in the ring soon, as this was his first fight in 13 months. He commented after his win, “People talk about ring rust. That sh*t is real!”
