Fundora-Thurman Card Prediction
WBC super welterweight champion Sebastian “The Towering Inferno” Fundora (23-1-1, 15 KOs) of Coachella, California, will defend his title this weekend against former unified world champion Keith “One Time” Thurman (32-1, 23 KOs) of Florida, headlining the PBC on Prime Video Pay-Per-View at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
The pay-per-view card features Cuban super welterweight Yoenis Tellez (11-1, 8 KOs) and Brian Mendoza (23-4, 17 KOs) in the co-feature bout. Undefeated middleweight Yoenli Hernandez (9-0, 8 KOs) of Cuba takes on veteran U.S. Olympian Terrell Gausha (24-5-1, 12 KOs) of Cleveland. Opening the pay-per-view card, undefeated Armenian heavyweight Gurgen Hovhannisyan (9-0, 8 KOs), fighting out of Los Angeles by way of Armenia, faces Cesar Navarro (15-3, 13 KOs) from Phoenix.
Gurgen Hovhannisyan vs. Cesar Navarro
The heavyweights open the pay-per-view card, as the 6’7” Armenian Hovhannisyan makes his pay-per-view debut, coming off a third-round stoppage of Chris Thomas. Navarro is coming off a TKO over Derek Saul Cardenas Perez.
Hovhannisyan appears to have the upside coming into this fight. He is clearly the taller fighter, looking to use his size, but Navarro has proven to be durable, going the distance in his two defeats.
The pick: Hovhannisyan by decision.
Yoenli Hernandez vs. Terrell Gausha
The undefeated Cuban Hernandez takes on the veteran Olympian Gausha. Hernandez defeated Kyron Davis last year and is coming off a first-round TKO over Ramon De La Cruz. Gausha has been in with the best and is coming off a split-decision loss to Elijah Garcia.
Coming into this fight, Hernandez has all the advantages, as the veteran Gausha has faced solid competition but has seen better days. Expect Gausha to give Hernandez solid work, as the Olympian has yet to be stopped.
The pick: Hernandez by decision.
Yoenis Tellez vs. Brian Mendoza
The co-feature is an interesting matchup. Tellez bounced back from his first defeat to Abass Barou with a technical decision win over Kendo Castaneda. Mendoza, who holds a knockout win over Sebastian Fundora, is coming off an eighth-round stoppage of Jesus Antonio Reyes.
A lot is on the line for both men, with Tellez looking for a title shot, while Mendoza could be eyeing a potential rematch against Fundora.
Tellez comes in with hand speed and footwork, a product of the Cuban amateur pedigree. Mendoza enters this fight with more will than skill, looking to make it a tough fight. Expect Mendoza to turn this into a street fight, as that may be his only shot at winning.
The pick: Yoenis Tellez by decision in a tough one.
Fundora vs. Thurman
The time has finally come for Fundora to get his big-name opponent. With Thurman suffering his only defeat to the legendary Manny Pacquiao in the summer of 2019, Fundora looks to make the most of this opportunity.
Last year, Fundora scored a spectacular KO over Chordale Booker in March and then defeated Tim Tszyu in seven rounds in their rematch. Thurman, meanwhile, has experienced a span of inactivity, scoring a third-round stoppage over Brock Jarvis over a year ago. Prior to that, he fought three years earlier, winning a unanimous decision over Mario Barrios in 2022.
Fundora will enter this fight with youth, height, and activity on his side. Expect him to use his distance to keep Thurman at bay, while also working effectively on the inside, peppering a tough and game Thurman.
The pick: Fundora by one-sided unanimous decision.
