The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced a new rule for participation in the Olympic Games on Thursday. Starting with the 2028 Games, women will be required to undergo genetic testing, as eligibility for any women’s category is currently limited to “biological females,” according to the organization.
Eligibility for the women’s category will be determined primarily through an SRY gene test to detect the absence or presence of this gene. Athletes who test negative will permanently meet the eligibility criteria to compete in the women’s category.
