Premier Boxing Club, Art Of Boxing USA, Opens Its Doors In North Charleston
With direct lineage to Bruce Lee, Art of Boxing’s method aims to create a new type of community, with fitness and mental clarity at its core.
Tucked away at 3567 Meeting Street Road in Suite 400 is Charleston’s newest boxing club, Art of Boxing USA. Founded by Head Coach, Othell Brown, the mission of AOB is to create a welcoming environment for people of all backgrounds and skill levels.
A long time Charleston resident and former John’s Island Firefighter, Art of Boxing is an accumulation of a lifelong dream for Coach Brown. As a former competitive amateur World Kickboxing Champ, the most influential years of his training were led by Coach Richard Chen – coach and mentor. Coach Chen was well-known to the Charleston community and across both coasts, coaching many athletes over the years.
The lineage of Art of Boxing extends all the way to Master Ip Man, who taught Bruce Lee, who taught Master Dan Inasonto who then taught Coach Chen – ultimately passing it down to Coach Brown. It is his belief that the true art is to go outside of the sport to incorporate different influences. For AOB, this includes elements of eastern martial arts. It is through meticulous precision and repetitive strikes, footwork and defensive drills that these abstract concepts connected to the AOB method become second nature.
“When our students are trained continuously and with a clear method, they are then able to enter a flow state that allows them to fluidly switch between combinations without a thought. The essence of this ideology is to create a flow, and then without warning, have the ability to break the loop with an unexpected strike,” says Coach Brown.
Most importantly to Art of Boxing is that the journey feels personal and achievable for all students. The ultimate goal is to not only challenge them to build muscle, but also character. It is the belief at AOB that the true art of the sport can have a profound impact on its students, their families and their growth and become a form of physical, mental and community wellness.
“Structured physical activity and sport is proven to have an astounding impact on youth, improving anxiety and depression, and contributing significantly to academic achievements. I have felt this firsthand, and we hope to be that source for our students.”
Art of Boxing offers a variety of classes for all skill levels for both adults and youth, including more advanced and competitive boxing. Most recently one of AOB’s top fighters, Ray Middleton, brought home the South Carolina Golden Gloves title in his weight division. AOB has a number of upcoming fights lined up. They also offer University and Corporate Employee Partnership programs.
