1976 Olympic Gold Medalist Jochen Bachfeld Passes

German Jochen Bachfeld has passed away at the age of 73. Bachfeld was one of many excellent amateurs to come out of the Traktor Schwerin boxing club in what was then East Germany.
Bachfeld represented East Germany at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal and went all the way, winning the gold medal with a 5-0 record during the tournament.
Jochen was forced to retire in 1980 due to an injury, finishing with a record of 107-15. Turning professional was, in those days, impossible for an East German athlete, although they trained harder and more extensively than most professional fighters ever did.
The Traktor Schwerin boxing club is still going strong.
