Ex-WBO champ Shokichi Iwata (16-2, 12 KOs), 108, seized his second world belt as he was awarded a unanimous technical decision (79-73 twice, 78-74) over defending WBC light flyweight titlist Knockout CP Freshmart (29-2, 11 KOs; AKA Thammanoon Niyomtrong), 108, from Thailand, at 1:33 of the eighth round on Sunday in Yokohama, Japan. Taking the initiative from the outset, Iwata kept whipping the slower champ with sharper jabs and combinations. Knockout sustained a gash caused by an accidental butt midway in round three, and it was often examined by the ring physician thereafter. Shokichi, five years his junior at 30, accelerated his attack and had the champ at bay in the sixth and seventh. Referee Cesar Castanon again had the nasty cut examined by the doctor in round eight, who signaled it was too bad for him to go on. Iwata looked stronger and more skillful than previously.

Promoter: Teiken Promotions.
