Rocha Tops Diaz Over Ten Rounds
By Boxing Bob Newman
Natural welterweight Alexis Rocha did as he pleased with former IBF junior lightweight champion Joseph “Jo Jo” Diaz. The size and power of Rocha, against the age and wear and tear of Diaz, was the difference in this fight.
This was Rocha’s first fight in exactly 15 months since his draw in a war against Raul Curiel. The two men were supposed to have a rematch in January of this year, but Rocha pulled out due to illness from the weight cut.
Perhaps the layoff contributed to Rocha becoming somewhat listless later in the fight. Diaz actually had his best round in the seventh, a round that most pundits didn’t think he would see.
Incredibly, Diaz seemed more lively as the fight went on. While he may not have necessarily appeared to be winning the rounds, he brought fans to their feet with his grit and refusal to quit as he gave as good as he got down the stretch.
All three judges saw it for Rocha by scores of 97-93, 98-92, and 100-90. Rocha improves to 26-2-1 with 16 KOs. Diaz falls to 34-9-1 with 16 KOs.
