Meinke Vs Vargas IBF Female Featherweight title to go 12 x 3-Minute Rounds

0 1

German world champion Nina Meinke (20-3, 4 KOs) will defend her IBF featherweight title against Dominican challenger Dyana Vargas (20-2-1, 13 KOs) on March 20 at the Fischauktionshalle in Hamburg, Germany. Notably, the fight is scheduled on BoxRec for 12 rounds, with each round lasting three minutes.

Professional women’s boxing typically runs championship fights to a maximum of 10 rounds, with each round lasting two minutes and featuring a one-minute rest period. This rule is supported by the WBC, who state that it is for the protection of the health and well-being of female boxers. In several instances however, the IBF, WBA and WBO have allowed their female champions to contest a title fight under the same standards as the men: 12 x 3-minute rounds. However, those same sanctioning bodies also allow for other female champions to opt for the standard 10 x 2-minute rounds if they so desire. Some advocates of that distance and round duration cite, not necessarily the safety issue, but the action and excitement element, as shorter rounds allow for more activity, due to having less time to impress the judges.
