By Anthony Cocks

In an excellent all-Mexican 10-round welterweight clash, Ricardo Salas lifted his ledger to 23-2-2 (17 KOs) with a classy eighth-round TKO victory over Jesus Saracho, who falls to 16-3-2 (12 KOs). Salas, 27, proved to be the more mature boxer, picking his shots wisely as he gradually broke down Saracho.

Salas made his intentions known early, nailing the 24-year-old southpaw with an overhand right in the opening round. Saracho tried to rough up Salas in the second, but it largely had no effect. The right hand continued to be the weapon of choice for Salas, who gradually started mixing in more offensive weapons as the rounds progressed. There were some good exchanges in the third, but by the fourth Salas began to take over. Saracho proved to be rugged, bullying Salas to the ropes at times, but by the fifth Salas was easily punching around Saracho’s guard, leaving him bloodied by the bell.

Salas increased the pressure in the sixth and continued the punishment in the seventh. Between rounds, Saracho was told by his corner that he needed a knockout to win. Referee Robert Hoyle reinforced this, telling Saracho that he needed to show him something or the fight would be stopped.

Salas forced the issue. He teed off on Saracho from the opening bell of the eighth, forcing him backward with crisp, hard shots. With Saracho’s head snapping back like a Pez dispenser, referee Hoyle decided he had seen enough, waving off the contest at the 2:05 mark.

The scores at the time of the stoppage were 69-64 (Tim Cheatham), 70-63 (Chris Migliore), and 69-64 (Steve Weisfeld), all in favor of Salas.
