By Boxing Bob Newman

Unheralded Venezuelan Lorenzo Parra made defending WBO International Featherweight champion Elijah Pierce eat his words, wiping the smile off his face and snatching the title in less than 5 minutes. Late in the first round Parra snapped Pierce’s head back and had him slightly wobbled, but Pierce was able to get out of the round.

Pierce seemed to exhibit a blend of overconfidence and disinterest in the second. Parra landed more telling blows and backed Pierce into a neutral corner where he rained blow after blow on the soon to be ex-champion, buckling his knees into a crouch.

Pierce’s eyes were rolled back in his head which was being knocked left and right by Parra’s powerful blows. Referee Ricky Gonzalez stepped in, halting matters at 1:44 of the second round. Parra wins the WBO International featherweight title and gains a measure of satisfaction.

During yesterday’s weigh-ins, Pierce had tried to mock Parra by handing him a package of women’s Maxi pads that had a likeness of Parra on the front, with his name and wearing a big pad. It’s safe to say Parra wiped the smile off of Pierce’s face, as well as knocking him out of his #2 WBO ranking. It likely would have been #1, had Pierce won the fight because previous #1, Brandon Figueroa, recently won the WBA title. #14 Parra will likely move up nicely in the rankings. His record moves to 24-1-1, 18 KOs, while that of Pierce drops to 21-3, 17 KOs.

Hometown hero Bryce Mills slowly but surely wore down Tobias Green, battering him in a neutral corner until referee Mark Nelson stepped in to stop the action at 1:23 of round 4. Mills took a few to delivers his own hard shots. Both men worked the body, but Mills had the better variety of blows in his arsenal, mixing in uppercuts which spelled the end for Green. Mills sensed he had his man hurt and went for the finish, pinning Green in a neutral corner, raining blows on his hurt foe until referee Nelson had seen enough.

The time was 1:23 of round four. Mills wins his first title- the WBC US Silver Super Lightweight Title. In his post-fight interview, Mills said despite his love for his home city of Syracuse (40 minutes from the Turning Stone Casino), when and if Las Vegas calls, he’ll answer the call. In fact, he called out fellow prospect Emiliano Vargas, who is actually fighting tonight on the Navarrete-Nuñez undercard.

Hotshot welterweight Curmel Moton felt out Wilfredo Flores for the first half of round one.
Moton trapped Flores in the corner pounding him ruthlessly, prompting referee Charlie Fitch to stop it at 3 minutes of the second round. Mo excuse Moton improves to 9-0, 7 KOs. Flores falls to 12-7-1, 5 KOs.

Super welterweight Rodrigo Mosquera III dropped Khalil Sanders with 10 seconds to go in the second round for a flash knockdown. It was an incredibly tactical fight between two fast southpaws. Midway through the third, a beautiful right-left combination dropped Sanders again and again he survived. Sanders did keep Mosquera honest, timing his own left hand counters with some success. But it wasn’t enough as the judges scored it: 40-34 x 3, all for Mosquera, now 5-0, 2 KOs. Sanders falls to 1-2, 1 KO.

Super welterweight Brandon Poulard ruthlessly pounded Charles Scott Jr. into submission with two knockdowns and a volley of brutal right hands. The second knockdown was scary as Scott’s head bounced off the canvas and he laid motionless on his back. The time was 2:40 of the first round. Poulard moves to 3-0, 3 KOs. Scott Jr. is 0-4.

Shera Mae Patricio and Maribel Ramirez battled six hard rounds for the female NABF Super Flyweight title. Ramirez had over four times professional ring experience as Patricio and it showed in her toughness. Patricios amateur pedigree and endurance showed as well with her punch selection and endurance. The judges scored it: 59-55 twice and 60-54 all for Patricio, now 8-0, 3 KOs and the new NABF champ. Ramirez falls to 15-14-4.

Super flyweights Damiana Andrello and Jessica Maltez went back and forth over the four round distance. Scores were as follows: 39:37, 40-36 x 2 for Andrello, now 2-1-1. Maltez falls to 2-4-2.

Super lightweights Katrina Scalzo and Michelle Cook opened the show and battled to a four round split draw. The scores were: 39-37 Scalzo, 40-36 Cook and 38-38.
