Interview: Shawn McCalman Ready To Shine In Montreal March 5th

0 0

The last time most boxing fans saw super middleweight Shawn McCalman( 17-1, 8 KOs) in the spotlight, he seemed to be on the brink of upsetting unbeaten Diego Pacheco before dropping a competitively hard fought decision in 2024. McCalman made a big impression in that bout on DAZN and has since racked up two wins. He also has added the services of well respected manager Zachary Levin and equally as respected trainer Stephen ‘Breadman’ Edwards with whom he currently is training in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Denver, Colorado native will now once again take on an unbeaten in local favorite Moreno Fendero (13-0, 10 KOs) based out of Canada. The bout will take place March 5th at the Montreal Casino, in Montreal Canada. Fightnews.com® caught up with McCalman recently to hear what he is up to…

I know you are currently training in Philadelphia but where are you originally from?

I was born and raised in Denver, Colorado. I participated in a combat sport early in life taking up Taekwondo. I also was a solid football player in High School.

When did you take up boxing?

I began boxing at 19 years old. I had 75 amateur fights. I was a 3x state golden gloves amateur boxing champion before turning professional in 2018.

When do you believe you made a turning point in your pro boxing career.

I would say in 2022 when I was called in to spar ex -world champ Sergey Kovalev. I did really well and not too long after that I was signed by Main Events Promotions.

Your performance vs Pacheco impressed many who saw the bout. What did you take from that fight?

I do not believe in making excuses. I thought I won the fight and know I could have done a lot more. I have another big opportunity ahead of me now.

How has it been training with ‘Breadman’?

Training has been going very well with him. He is very detail oriented.

What do you know about your opponent?

He has a very explosive style and seems to seek the knockout. I probably have one of the longest reaches in the super middleweight division and will definitely have the physical advantages in this matchup. This is a big opportunity with the bout being for a regional title of a major sanctioning body and a chance for me to get into the world rankings.
