Professional Boxing In Sweden
By Per-Åke Persson
Professional boxing in Sweden continues to struggle but tomorrow (February 21) BBU cruiser champion and local hero Samo Jangirov (10-6-3) defends the title at Safiren in Katrineholm against Estonian Madis Hiiet (3-2).
This is a rematch with Hiiet winning their first fight in a big upset back in 2024 in Finland. Jangirov is now looking to get his career back on track.
On the undercard super middle prospect Ajet Jusufi (3-0) goes for win number four against Georgian Merab Tchintcharauli (1-3).
Then on March 28 professional boxing returns to Trollhattan for the first time since 1968. Back then Ray Patterson (Floyd’s younger brother) headlined against Spaniard Mariano Echevarria – and won.
On the March 28 event local hero and amateur star Peter Ahlberg makes his pro debut in a small pro-am event.
It should also be noted that then future heavyweight champion of the world Jersey Joe Walcott was in Trollhattan in 1949 and a crowd of about 15000 saw Jersey Joe do a six round exhibition against three different opponents.
