Nieky Holzken Announces Retirement
By Per-Åke Persson
42-year old Nieky Holzken (15-2) became the latest but not the last to find out that time waits for no one as he lost an upset unanimous decision to German Besir Ay (21-2) in a fight for the vacant WBF super middleweight title Saturday (Feb 7) night at home in Helmond (the Netherlands). It was scored 115-113 twice and 116-112.
The Dutchman has mainly been active ín kickboxing but turned to pro boxing in 2013 and fought Callum Smith for the WBC Diamond title in 2018 in a fight that was also a part of the World Boxing Super Series Tournament.
Holzken announced his retirement on social media shortly afterwards but will remain in boxing and martial arts as a coach.
