Jan Paul Rivera Aims For WBO Latino Featherweight Title On February 28th In Ponce, PR

Universal Promotions presented this afternoon the initial details of what will be the return of “The Best Boxing in Puerto Rico” to the “Noble City,” after a 10-year absence, with the super event “WAR IN PONCE,” to be held on Saturday, February 28, at the Juan “Pachín” Vicens Auditorium in Ponce. “On February 28, we will end a 10-year absence in Ponce,” said Universal Promotions president Javier Bustillo. “We are grateful to Mayor Marlese Sifre for her support of the sport and for allowing us to return to Ponce with high-quality boxing. There will be 10 great fights featuring the best prospects from Puerto Rico, most of them representing the southern region. We will have the whole world watching our ‘Noble City’ on an explosive night.”

In the main event of the night, world-ranked featherweight (126 pounds) Jan Paul Rivera (14-0, 7 KOs) will seek to be crowned WBO (World Boxing Organization) Latino champion when he faces Mexican-American Conrado Martínez (12-2) in a 10-round bout. “I am very grateful to my company, Universal Promotions, for trusting in me and giving me the opportunity to fight for a championship again,” said the 24-year-old boxer from Salinas. “We are excited about this fight card, as we are fighting so close to home. I know all my people from Salinas will be there at the Pachín. I’m more prepared than ever and ready to put on a great show.”

Looking to return to winning ways in front of his home crowd, Ponce’s favorite son, Karlo Rodríguez (9-1-1, 6 KOs), will attempt to win his first career championship when he faces Christopher Castillo in an eight-round bout in the super bantamweight division (122 pounds). “It’s a true honor to be able to fight in front of my people in such a historic venue as the Juan Pachín Vicens Auditorium,” Rodríguez said. “Things happen for a reason, and now I’ll have the opportunity to be crowned champion at home. You’ll see a renewed Karlo. It will be a great night of boxing.”

In what promises to be another action-packed battle, Santa Isabel super lightweight prospect (140 pounds) Mathew “Sugar Kid” Soto (4-0, 1 KO) will fight a six-round bout against the tough and experienced Emmanuel “Tito” Morales. The promising San Lorenzo super featherweight prospect (130 pounds), William “Yeyo” Colón (8-0, 5 KOs), will face a significant challenge in a six-round fight against the dangerous José Del Valle. In a Puerto Rico vs. Mexico showdown, the prospect from Juana Díaz in the mini flyweight division (108 pounds), Jedrier “El Chefcito” Reyes (7-1, 4 KOs), will face off against Mexican fighter Juan García (16-2-2, 12 KOs) in a bout scheduled for eight rounds.

Also in action will be prospects José Díaz (1-0, 1 KO), Adrier Reyes (Pro Debut), Christopher James Jorge (1-0, 1 KO), Bryan Pérez (5-0, 2 KOs), and Giovan “El Látigo” Meléndez (Pro Debut).
