William Scull Ahead Of Title Fight In Denmark: “I love These Challenges”

0 4

Just two days until the fight! AGON’s former world champion William Scull has been in Kolding since the beginning of the week, working with his coaching team on the final touches, both tactically and in terms of making the last few kilos. On January 31, the Cuban-born fighter will step into the ring at the Sydbank Arena against the undefeated Dane Jacob Bank. At stake is the WBO Global title, which Bank intends to defend in front of his home crowd.

For Scull, the fight is far more than just a comeback. “It’s a great opportunity to showcase my talent once again,” the former world champion explained beforehand. After his much-discussed performance in Riyadh against Canelo Alvarez, in which he lost his IBF world title, Scull reflects thoughtfully on the biggest fight of his career: “It was a great experience. Of course, I was disappointed by the defeat, but I accepted it as constructive criticism that helped me develop. Many people criticize me, but no one criticizes Canelo, who couldn’t really land a punch or corner me in the ring. Good footwork isn’t the same as running away, even if some people who don’t understand much about boxing claim otherwise.”

Scull is well aware that the road back to the top won’t be easy. Fighting a young, undefeated champion in his home country is a conscious risk. “I know he’s hungry and that the fight is taking place at his home. But I’ve almost always boxed away from home in my career, and I like exactly those kinds of challenges,” Scull said. A tune-up fight in familiar surroundings was therefore out of the question for him.

AGON’s professional fighter has also brought fresh impetus to the team. Scull is working for the first time with Ernesto Aroche, the former coach of the Cuban youth national team, who most recently coached the Spanish national team in Madrid. “He prepared me for this fight and brings a new perspective and a wealth of experience,” Scull explained regarding the collaboration.

Considering the current situation in the super middleweight division, following Canelo’s title loss, his elbow surgery, and Terence Crawford’s retirement, Scull sees his chances clearly: “This weight class has always been strong. I’m ready to fight and fully focused on this fight. After a victory, the next big opportunities will automatically follow.”

Tomorrow, the obligatory weigh-in is on the agenda before the fight takes place on Saturday at the Sydbank Arena. His teammate Carlos Castillo will also be in action on the undercard. The talented and undefeated heavyweight will face Gianmarco Cardillo, who has only lost once in 15 fights. The William Scull vs. Jacob Bank fight, as well as the undercard bouts, will be broadcast live on DAZN.
