Horiike Dethrones OPBF 140lb Champ Kim In Korea
By Joe Koizumi
Unbeaten Japanese prospect Hiroki Horiike (7-0, 4 KOs; amateur 21-7, 5 KO/SC), 139.75, wrested the OPBF super lightweight belt when he upset defending champ Joo-Young Kim (20-3-3, 11 KOs), 139.5, by a majority decision (96-94 twice, 95-95) over ten hot frames on Sunday in Seoul, Korea. It was Kim’s first defense since he dethroned Daishi Nagata in Tokyo last June. But it was Horiike that took the initiative, maintained the pressure and dominated the second half to confirm his victory. Kim showed his heart, but the challenger was a better jabber that controlled the contest with precision.
