Vergil Ortiz Jr. has filed a lawsuit against Golden Boy Promotions and its CEO Oscar De La Hoya for breach of contract and interference with earnings, seeking to terminate his promotional agreement and recover millions in lost earnings. The key allegations are as follows:

Contract Termination Right: Ortiz’s legal team (Gregory M. Smith) claims he has the right to end the contract because Golden Boy’s streaming agreement with DAZN expired on December 31, 2025, without an exclusive alternative in place, a condition specified in their contract.

Failed Fight Negotiations: The lawsuit alleges Golden Boy failed to work in good faith to secure a high-profile fight against Jaron “Boots” Ennis, compromising Ortiz’s earning potential. De La Hoya’s public attacks on other promoters and Saudi boxing figure Turki Alalshikh actively sabotaged opportunities for lucrative, Saudi-backed fights.

Violation of Contractual Mandates: Ortiz claims Golden Boy violated a clause requiring them to present at least three potential opponents for any bout. Instead, they allegedly offered only the Ennis fight and threatened to “bench” Ortiz if he declined that sole offer.

Lack of Transparency: The lawsuit states that Golden Boy did not fully disclose the terms of written offers related to the Ennis fight to Ortiz or his team, further breaching their agreement.

Golden Boy Promotions has refuted Ortiz’s move to end the contract, contending they are still in negotiations for a DAZN renewal.

The genesis of the suit stems from De La Hoya’s issues with Rich Mirigian, the manager of Ortiz Jr., over the handling of Ortiz’s career and fight negotiations, particularly regarding a potential bout with Ennis.

De La Hoya publicly stated that Mirigian should not be involved in the negotiations, clarifying that it is the promoter’s (Golden Boy’s) role to negotiate the fights. He tweeted, “As our lawyers have made clear, you don’t negotiate for Vergil’s fights, I do.”

De La Hoya has accused Mirigian of “running his mouth” on social media instead of allowing Golden Boy to handle the negotiations professionally to secure the best deal for Ortiz.
