Filipino underdog Joseph Sumabong (9-1, 4 KOs), 104, acquired the vacant WBO Asia Pacific minimumweight belt when he upset previously unbeaten Japanese prospect WBA#7 Takero Kitano (9-1-1, 4 KOs), 105, by winning a unanimous decision (96-93 twice, 97-92) over ten hard-fought rounds on Tuesday in Tokyo, Japan. A climax happened midway in round one, when Sumabong exploded a vicious left hook, very badly dropping the prefight favorite to the deck. Kitano attempted to take back the initiative afterward, but he lost his composure, rhythm and precision, repeatedly hitting the air with full power. Despite his great height disadvantage Sumabong effectively retaliated with more accurate combinations all the way to be awarded an upset victory.
