Amateur Boxer Passes After Bout In Michigan

Amateur boxer Tyrone Welch, 22, died after a boxing match on Saturday, October 4th at the Gideon Boxing Club on Hancock Street in Saginaw, Michigan.

Welch collapsed after the third round and was taken to a local hospital.

The Gideon Boxing Club is a nonprofit organization that provides a place of belonging and mentorship for young adults in the Saginaw, Michigan area.

The Gideon Boxing Academy operates like any gym, with an annual membership and monthly usage fees. Welch reportedly began boxing training between the ages of 16 and 17.

Shirley Welch, Tyrone’s mother, told the media that she feels frustrated about the amount of medical assistance she expects at boxing events and the trainers’ insistence that Tyrone continue fighting. She also stated that she hoped CPR would have been performed more quickly.

Ms. Welch expressed her solidarity and concern for better safety protocols in amateur boxing as well. Welch’s autopsy is expected to determine the cause of his death, and should reinforce the need for first aid and medical assistance at boxing events, regardless of whether the

event is amateur or professional.
