Rafferty-Chamberlain Draw
In a classic battle for the British and Commonwealth super lightweight titles, defending champion Jack Rafferty and challenger Mark Chamberlain left it all in the ring as they battled over twelve tactical, yet hard-fought rounds.
With Chamberlain cut outside his right eye and over the inner part of his left eye, from the third round on, he had an uphill battle through a mask of blood. Rafferty, for his part had swelling across his entire brow over both eyes from the aggressive counters of Chamberlain. Rafferty seemed hurt in the last round, staggering into the ropes from a hard Chamberlain combination, yet he came forward and nullified any late surge Chamberlain might’ve tried to mount.
There was little to choose between these two as both had their moments throughout this thriller. The judges agreed as their scores reflected in the outcome. They tabulated it as follows: 115-114 for Chamberlain and 114-114 twice, for a majority draw.
Rafferty retains both his belts and remains undefeated at 26-0-1, 17 KOs, while Chamberlain goes to 17-1-1, 12 KOs. A rematch seems to be a foregone conclusion.
