Omar Trinidad and Lorenzo Parra Draw

Top Rated featherweight Omar Trinidad, (19-0-2, 13 KOs), of Boyle Heights, California and Venezuela’s Lorenzo Parra, (23-1-1, 17 KOs) fought to a ten round draw Friday night in headlining Tom Loeffler’s 360 Promotions Hollywood Fight Nights at the Chumash Casino in Santa Ynez, California.
Off to a slow start, Trinidad sized up and measured Parra in the first, using the jab and feinting away. Parra was aggressive to begin the second round as he connected on Trinidad backing him up and drawing some smirks from Trinidad.
In the third, Trinidad began to open up, letting his hands go but Parra connected with leather of his own. Trinidad backed Parra up with a left hook to start the fourth round, the Venezuelan stayed busy with the jab, but Trinidad stayed close applying the pressure. The referee Gerard White issued a warning to Parra late in the round for holding behind the head. At the halfway point in the fifth, Trinidad was effective pressing behind the one-two as he outworked Parra.
The second half of the fight in the sixth round, Trinidad and Parra stood in the pocket exchanging inside with Trinidad popping the jab finding openings, beating Parra to the punch. A pair of left hooks by Trinidad connected in the seventh round stopping Parra’s momentum. Trinidad got rough later in the round hitting after the break prompting a warning from the referee White. The following round, Parra landed a solid combination in the eighth but that did not stop Trinidad from mixing it up.
Exchanging late in the fight, Trinidad and Parra stood at close quarters in the ninth letting their hands go. The tenth and final round, Trinidad stayed busy and let his hands go as Parra popped the jab, a blinding overhand right by the Venezuelan connected but Trinidad returned the favor connecting with an uppercut. Trinidad urged Parra to trade in closing as the two fighters made it to the final bell going the distance.
In the end judges Jack Reiss scored the bout 96-94 overruled by judges Carla Caiz and Lou Moret scoring the bout 95-95 as the bout was declared a draw. Trinidad retains his WBC Continental Americas featherweight title.
Hiruta Defends WBO Super Flyweight Title
WBO super flyweight champion Mizuki “Mimi” Hiruta, (9-0, 2 KOs) of Japan successfully defended her title against top rated Naomy Cardenas ‘Kusa’ Gomez, (9-1, 2 KOs) of Chihuahua, Mexico in the co-feature.
Cardenas came out aggressively in the opening round attacking Hiruta. The champ boxed and countered early on and didn’t appear to be fazed by Cardenas’s aggressive style. A short counter left by Hiruta in round two connected solidly causing a mouse on Cardenas’s eye.
The southpaw Hiruta began to let loose in round three, landing a solid right hand in as the champ continued to box and stay composed despite the Mexican pressing. The champ began to get her rhythm boxing in the fourth, keeping Cardenas at bay, countering her aggressiveness. Reaching the halfway point of the fight, Cardenas kept pressing but Hiruta did not allow Cardenas’s aggressive style to dictate the pace, as Mimi stayed in the pocket connecting compact punches.
Hiruta appeared to slip to begin the sixth round as the referee immediately ruled it a slip, prompting Cardenas to pressure the champ but Hiruta stayed composed continuing to box and counter. Working the jab, and continuing to box away, Hiruta was in a groove outboxing Cardenas.
Late in the fight, the champ controlled the fight boxing effectively as Hiruta began to separate herself from Cardenas. It was all Hiruta heading into the tenth and final round, but Cardenas kept coming and was on the champ throughout the fight proving to be a tough out for Hiruta.
Carla Caiz and Lou Moret scored it 100-90, and Jack Reiss scored the bout 98-92 as Hiruta wins a unanimous decision and retains her WBO title.
Abel Mejia Bounces Off the Canvas to Get Stoppage
In a wild one, undefeated super bantamweight El Modena, California’s Abel Mejia, (9-0, 6 KOs) scored an exciting stoppage bouncing off the canvas in stopping Filipino veteran Aston Palicte, (28-9-1, 23 KOs).
The Filipino applied his experience early on and came out strong as Palicte floored Mejia in the opening round with a huge right. However, Mejia remained composed and returned the favor in round two, landing a crushing right of his own and stunning and backing Palicte to the ropes as the Filipino was briefly unresponsive forcing the referee Gerard White to step in to stop the fight at 1:34 of round two.
Lupita Medina Gets the Victory
Maywood, California’s Guadalupe Medina, (11-0, 2 KOs) won a hard-fought decision over against a very tough Rubi Gutierrez (5-3-1) of Coahuila, Mexico in an eight round minimumweight bout.
After a slow start early on, Gutierrez got things started in round three as the Mexican appeared to connect Medina with a left hook, but Medina’s crouch was the factor, however Gutierrez landed solid and pressured to close the round. The aggression continued from Gutierrez in round four, connecting solid combinations but Medina held her own and traded.
Halfway through the fight, Medina kept her distance and boxed away working the jab as Rubi pressed stalking most of the fifth. In the sixth, Gutierrez continued to hunt with power punches as Medina was on her toes. Late in the fight in the seventh, Rubi kept pressing as Medina stood her ground boxing away welcoming the exchange as the ladies closed the round shooting away. The eighth and final round, Medina started it off landing an overhand right but that did not deter Gutierrez from pressing as they closed trading away to the final bell.
In completing eight rounds, judge Jack Reiss scored the bout a one sided 80-72, while judges Carla Kaiz scored it closer 77-75, and Lou Moret had it 77-75 for Gutierrez as the Baby Face pulls off the split decision.
Angel Carrillo Shines
Super bantamweight Angel Carrillo, (5-0-1, 2 KOs) of Oxnard had a solid performance in winning a unanimous decision over Compton’s Damien Basulto, (3-1,1 KO). Carillo displayed superior boxing skills and ring generalship, pressuring Basulto throughout the fight. Carillo takes the decision and stays undefeated.
Preliminary Bouts
Making their debuts, lightweights Jonathan Vasquez (1-0) of Santa Maria, California by way of Tijuana, Mexico and Brian Rodriguez (0-1) of Torrance, California went the distance over four rounds. Vasquez took it to Rodriguez throughout the fight, displaying his aggressive style and power. Rodriguez held his own mixing it with Vasquez as the two fighters went all out to the final bell.
After completing four rounds, Carla Caiz and Lou Moret scored the bout 40-36, and Jack Reiss scored it 39-37.
In the opening bout from the Chumash Casino in Santa Ynez, California, super featherweight Abraham Morales (2-0, 1 KO) of Oxnard, California by way of Puebla, Mexico won a unanimous decision over Nesly Trezile (1-4) of Inglewood, California. Morales scored an early knockdown, and pressured Trezile throughout the fight, mixing it up in route to the decision win.
Judges Lou Moret and Karla Caiz scored the bout 39-36, while Jack Reiss scored the bout closer 38-37 as Morales takes the unanimous decision.
