AGON Sports Promotes September 12 “Cuban Card” In Berlin
Top-class replacements for the injured former world champion Vincenzo Gualtieri have been found: AGON Sports is bringing two of the most successful amateur boxers of the last decade to Berlin. The exceptional Cuban athletes Arlen López and Lázaro Álvarez (both signed with AGON Sports) will enter the ring on September 12th as part of the big AGON boxing evening at the Uber Eats Music Hall. Both will be competing in WBA international title fights.
With the “Cuba Card,” AGON promoter Ingo Volckmann is making a sporting statement and treating the Berlin audience to a truly top-class boxing experience. Lázaro Álvarez, three-time amateur world champion and three-time Olympic bronze medalist, brings not only an exceptional fighting résumé but also one of the most elegant boxing styles internationally. “I’m thrilled to be boxing in Berlin! Germany has a great boxing history, and I want to show the fans Cuban boxing at the highest level. I’m ready to deliver something special!” says Álvarez.
Arlen López, two-time Olympic champion (gold in 2016 and 2020), 2024 Olympic bronze medalist, and former amateur world champion, also promises great excitement: “Berlin is a special place for me because it’s the capital of Germany, and I know there are many boxing fans there. I want to give my best performance and prove to everyone that Cuban boxing is alive and inspiring.”
Both Cubans are undefeated as professionals and are fighting in Berlin for WBA titles, which should pave their way to the world’s top.
AGON promoter Ingo Volckmann is enthusiastic about the short-term solution: “Of course, it’s bitter that Vincenzo is out, but with Arlen and Lázaro, we’ve found a sensational solution. Both are among the most successful amateurs in the world, they are technically brilliant and offer top-class boxing. For the Berlin audience, this is a unique opportunity to experience Cuban boxing in its purest form.”
In addition to the two Cubans, the Berlin fan favorites Hamsat Shadalov (in the main event for the WBA title) and Paul Wall (in the duel for the German championship) will continue to be the focus of the event. Overall, spectators can look forward to numerous fights, several international title fights, and a top-class boxing spectacle.
